There is definitely a leaky warp pipe somewhere within Nintendo right now, as any avid switch gamer already knows, and a new, albeit quite cryptic, rumor suggests a new 2D Zelda game announcement is all but imminent.
Arguably the biggest leak of the last month or so on the Nintendo from is the existence and upcoming reveal of the Zelda Ocarina of Time remake – a ground-up rebuild of what is easily one of the most popular and beloved 3D titles in the series. This one, if the leaks and rumors are true, is in fact the big Switch 2 holiday game for 2026.
However, more recently some hints from a relatively known and reliable Nintendo Insider suggests a new 2D Zelda game is in the works right now as well. The leaker is suggesting the game will be revealed soon ahead of a 2027 release, or in 2027, it would appear.
Insider Nash Weedle recently quoted one of their own posts on X, adding (as translated from Spanish): “Heroes awaken, the drums are resounding for 2027.”
That’s not saying a ton in any obvious way, but the post Weedle quoted reads, “Richard > Edward > Bernard.”
Those in the know will already see where we are going here – Richard was reportedly the internal codename for the The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening Remake, and Edward was the early/secret title for The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.
This new post could suggest that Bernard is perhaps the internal name for an upcoming new Zelda game set for release next. There is no clear indication whether or not the 2027 mention is for the announcement or the release though.
One can only assume that, if any of this is true at all, Bernard is referring to a new 2D Zelda game of some kind, but it’s hard to say if it is a remake or something entirely new like Echoes of Wisdom. With the machine translation here, it is also hard to pick apart Weedle’s words for better hints – is it Heroes, or Hero?
Either way, with all of the Nintendo leaks this year, and the fact that some of them have already come true, there might actually we some weight to this cryptic hint, although we cannot confirm any of this – I feel like we would have heard about this from some of the same sources of the other major leaks already if it were true, but it’s hard to say for sure.
Let’s hope the rumored official reveal of the new StarFox game this month actually comes true – there’s only a few days left at this point.
