PlayStation is going all digital: Sony officially set to end production of physical discs for new games

Say goodbye to physical PlayStation games on a disc folks. Rockstar just put the long-awaited Grand Theft Auto 6 up for pre-order with no disc in the box – some gamers were very much not happy about this. And now, in an official post on the PlayStation Blog, Sony just announced it will no longer release physical discs for new games launching on PlayStation consoles.

While it certainly felt like this was all but an inevitability, it does feel like it’s all happening quicker than expected. There’s no disc in the GTA VI box, and starting in 2028, there won’t be one in the box for all new PlayStation games.

Citing “shifting trends in consumer preference,” Sony has now announced that all “new games will be released on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.”

This change is not live just yet. It, in fact, won’t come into effect until 2028, but the beginning of the end is already here, as many suggested when Rockstar put a piece of paper in the GTA VI box instead of a disc.

…physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.

Following this date, new games will be available on “PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only,” but this change has “no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format,” according to today’s official announcement.

While surely also part of cost-cutting measures, Sony says this is a “natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment,” adapting to the “general preference for digital media significantly [outpacing] physical discs.”

We’ll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or PlayStation Store.
