Nintendo readying development on new Switch 2 OLED edition console, reports claim

It appears as though Nintendo could be in the process of developing a new Switch 2 console with an OLED display, according to reports.

As exciting as the launch of Switch 2 was, despite being fraught with tariff issues and delays, many gamers were disappointed to learn the next-generation Nintendo console would ship without the OLED display we already saw land on the previous-generation machine.

Since then, it seems as though most folks, ourselves included, just assume Nintendo will release a special edition or new Nintendo Switch 2 with an OLED display in order to bolster sales and breathe new life into its latest gaming platform at some point.

A new report out of Korea (via Nintendo Life) suggests that various sources are claiming Nintendo is actively in the process of developing a new Switch 2 console with an OLED display.

These reports claim the new machine will have the same resolution as the existing version at 1080p FHD.

Nintendo is reportedly tapping Samsung to supply the OLED displays, much like it did for the Switch OLED edition, but it does not appear as though the actual display’s foot print will be larger this go around – the Switch OLED model shipped with a 7-inch display as opposed to the 6.2-inches of the original base model.

If these sources and reports are accurate, it would seem Nintendo is targeting late 2027 or early 2028 with the new Switch 2 OLED edition. This, more or less, checks out, as it would be far too soon to be launching one this year. And I guess that means that, if rumors of a special edition Zelda Ocarina of Time Switch 2 are true, and it is releasing this year with the remake, it will most likely just feature a new coat of paint and not the new display.

Question is how much is this thing going to cost?

Machine translated from original report:

Nintendo is considering applying rigid OLED to the Switch 2, but has not yet confirmed the release of the Switch 2 OLED due to the price difference compared to liquid crystal display (LCD) products.
