Switch 2 gamers everywhere are soon to the field of Hyrule as Nintendo ramps up for the launch of what is widely expected to be its biggest holiday launch – The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake. Rumors and leaks have been flying since well before Nintendo made the remake official, and that special edition Zelda Switch 2 console is surfacing again, but it might not be the Ocarina of Time model.
Well back, and well before Nintendo went prime time with the reveal teaser for the new Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, rumors and leaks surfaced regarding an upcoming Ocarina of Time remake special edition console.
These leaks largely stemmed from a generally reliable source, or at least one that has been correct a few times this year already, but it seems as though the latest is pointing towards a more general Zelda anniversary hardware lineup rather than something specifically tied to the remake.
2026 does indeed mark the 40th anniversary of the Zelda franchise, and with the new remake inbound as well as the live action Zelda film thereafter, it does make sense that Nintendo might rather a more general approach to what sounds like its next addition to the growing lineup of Zelda-themed Nintendo hardware – Wind Waker HD Wii U and the OLED Tears of the Kingdom Switch, among others.
What was initially expected to be a dedicated special edition Switch 2 console, potentially bundled with the game (but probably not), is now believed to be a 40th anniversary Zelda machine, and potentially a Switch 2 Pro Controller that, if indeed real, is likely to be available on its own as well.
The latest rumors come from a couple folks, one of which claims to have seen the controller, and the other is the aforementioned leaker who has been right about a number of recent Switch 2 leaks.
Some or none of this may or may not be real – we cannot corroborate any of it – but it certainly isn’t hard to believe considering Nintendo’s track record with Zelda-themed hardware, the upcoming remake release, live action film, and anniversary celebrations.
Some have suggested a Nintendo Direct is inbound for August, and we might very well get official word then, but others have suggested Nintendo will go dark on its Zelda plans until the major September Direct goes live in a couple month’s time.
