Way back before the Switch 2 was even made official earlier this year, folks spotted patents that uncovered the mouse mode that indeed came to fruition. And now, recently spotted and newly filed Nintendo patents are suggesting some additional Switch 2 Joy-Con functionality could be on the way.
Patent filings, as you likely by now, are certainly not actual confirmation that a new feature or product will hit the market, but rather just an indication of what’s going on behind closed doors. And in this case behind the closed doors at Nintendo’s top secret prototype design firms.
As mentioned above, back in February Nintendo patents surfaced suggesting the new Switch 2 Joy-Con would actually be able to deliver mouse functionality and, as you already know by now, they very much do.
Fast forward to today, and a new Nintendo patent has surfaced suggesting we could see some additional functionality coming to the latest-generation Joy-Con in the form of what folks are referring to as a crank and some kind of clickable wheel.
The patent (spotted by Nintendo Patents Watch) shows off a pair of seemingly physical add-on accessories that would expand in the Joy-Con functionality for certain games, or perhaps more specifically, the ability to hit the fishing hole in Hyrule and Pokémon – this might even be something that would be used in that rumored upcoming Animal Crossing game for Switch 2. Or maybe even a brand new Mario fishing experience? A new Switch 2 Sports experience?
Here’s a look at the patent renders:

Now of course, all of this might just be something Nintendo is testing out, and eventually amount to nothing at all. But we did get the mouse mode, and it wouldn’t be the first time the internet spots an actual product in patent form. You never know, we might actually be fishing in Zelda and the new Animal Crossing game by the time they actually see the light of day.
