New Virtual Boy officially launches on Switch and Switch 2 today

As we reported previously, Virtual Boy is set to make its debut in the Nintendo Classics library today, and it appears it is now live for Switch Online + Expansion Pack members.

Virtual Boy now live on Switch and Switch 2

After the stereoscopic portable console made it out of Nintendo’s R&D1 labs back in 1995, the new Virtual Boy is making its return today for Switch Online + Expansion Pack members. Nintendo debuted the new addition to its Nintendo Classics library back in September of last year, and it is finally set to launch today as the new Virtual Boy for Nintendo Switch 2/Nintendo Switch and Virtual Boy (Cardboard Model) for Nintendo Switch 2/Nintendo Switch begin to arrive on the doorsteps of those who pre-ordered as of yesterday by the looks of it.

With a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch players can now access a collection of Virtual Boy games to play anytime, anywhere! Create suspend points in each game to save your progress, rewind to fix your mistakes, and adjust the controls to suit your preferences as you bash robots in Teleroboxer, jump between background and foreground in Virtual Boy Wario Land, and more.

Virtual Boy wasn’t exactly a hit when it debuted back in the mid ’90s, in fact far from it –Nintendo shut down production roughly a year after, and we presume much of the same could happen here to some degree.

The staying power of these odd monochrome pseudo 3D parallax games remains to be seen, but things have changed and the nostalgia surrounding these sorts of new-vintage gaming platforms is well…a thing. It’s just hard to imagine these games capturing folks’ attention all that much more than a quick 15 minute blast every once in a while.

The new headset is a bit of a collector’s item, and plenty of folks have already picked one up if not for any other reason than that, and well…you, technically speaking, have to spend the price of a Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership and the $99 for the headset (or $25 for the cardboard one) to even play the games. That completely sucks if you ask me, but just having the headset seems to be far more compelling than really using it for some folks.

The Virtual Boy for Nintendo Switch 2/Nintendo Switch accessory or the Virtual Boy (Cardboard Model) for Nintendo Switch 2/Nintendo Switch accessory is required to play Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics.

Nonetheless the new Virtual Boy platform has arrived for Switch and Switch 2 and if you do plan on using one of those headsets – still up for purchase for Nintendo Switch Online members – they are now live. Here’s a look at the launch game lineup:

  • Teleroboxer
  • Galactic Pinball
  • RED ALARM
  • GOLF
  • Virtual Boy Wario Land
  • 3-D TETRIS
  • The Mansion of Innsmouth

You can also expect some previously unreleased titles going live at some point – D-HOPPER and Zero Racers – along the following in the future:

  • Mario Clash
  • Mario Tennis
  • Jack Bros
  • Space Invaders Virtual Collection
  • Virtual Bowling
  • Virtual Force
  • V-Tetris

Here’s our hands-on video with the headset/games for a closer look (above) and here’s Nintendo’s overview trailer it released late last month (below).
