Nintendo is kicking off the Pokémon 30th anniversary in a big way today with the announcement of Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Red for Switch. Or more specifically the remakes of those Gen 1 games that originally released on Game Boy Advance – Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. But what’s new in the Switch versions? Are Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen coming to Switch Online? Are there specific Switch 2 Editions? Let’s dive in below.
Will Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue ever get released on Switch?
Yes, they kind of just did. Nintendo says the FireRed and LeafGreen remakes are just enhanced versions of the original games, so it just decided to release those instead. There are differences between the two, and some hardcore Trainers won’t like the sound of that answer, but it isn’t entirely wrong.
We thought users will appreciate the ultimate versions of those original adventures, which add various features and upgrades to the contents of Pokémon Red Version and Pokémon Blue Version.
Is Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Red coming to Switch Online?
Well, we don’t know, but we do know Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen are essentially Game Boy Advance remakes of the original Gen 1 game, and they are not coming to Switch Online. These are just classic Game Boy games getting re-released on the eShop for Switch and Switch 2.
Will Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen release on the Switch Online Nintendo Classics library?
As of right now, no. Nintendo says it felt like it would be fun for the big 30-year anniversary to “return to the ultimate versions of the original Pokémon adventures in the Kanto region with these special releases.” These two titles are only being released as standalone software and there are no plans at this time to release them as part of the Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics collection.
Will Nintendo release physical versions of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen for Switch?
No, Nintendo has specifically stated these games for Switch will “not receive physical releases.” They are only available as digital software on the Nintendo eShop.
Are there Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen Switch 2 Edition versions?
No, there are only Nintendo Switch versions, but they are, of course, playable on Switch 2. Both versions are the same, save for anything inherently only available on the newer console.
Are there any enhancements in the Switch versions of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen?
Generally speaking the new Switch versions are the same as the Game Boy Advance versions, but due to the difference in hardware, some features “operate differently,” according to Nintendo:
- Whereas the games’ connectivity features required the Game Boy Advance Game Link cable or Game Boy Advance Wireless Adapter on the Game Boy Advance system, those features can now be enjoyed on Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch via built-in local wireless connection.
- As with games played on Nintendo Switch 2 in general, Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version can be enjoyed while using the GameChat feature.
- All of the games’ original connectivity features will work just as they did on Game Boy Advance via local wireless connection.
- It will be possible to connect with up to four other players in the Pokémon Wireless Club, located on the second floor of a Pokémon Center. Players can access Union Rooms to trade, battle, or play a minigame.
- Online play is not supported.
