To coincide with the launch of the latest film in the Star Wars’ franchise, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Hollywood Memorabilia has teamed up with Disney and Lucas Arts to give fans their latest chance at bringing a piece of the movies home. Today they’ve announced that it would be putting screen-used production pieces of the infamous Death Star up for auction.
In the past, Star Wars enthusiasts have had the opportunity to bring home props from the various films like Han Solo’s blaster and even Luke Skywalker’s Lightsaber from Return of the Jedi. Now fans will have the chance to bid on yet another piece of memorabilia from a galaxy far, far away; a section of the original Death Star.
Created in the time leading up to the release of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope in 1976, visual effect artists over at Industrial, Light and Magic pieced together a massive and intricately detailed portion of the Death Star used for up-close shots in the film.
Just about anyone who’s seen the first Star Wars film can remember the iconic moments where the Rebel X-Wing starfighters storm the Death Star’s trenches in hopes of blowing up the Imperial super weapon, which prominently feature the original screen-used section of the Death Star’s surface.
The upcoming auction features just a small portion of the original prop, but one that is still unmistakably from the Death Star. Alongside the piece of memorabilia, the winning bidder will also receive several original certified documents, confirming its history and authenticity. It is said to be the only official section of the Death Star to ever be available for purchase, meaning this will certainly be a hot item for Star Wars collectors.
The Death Star piece will be going up for sale starting tomorrow, May 24th at 9PM EST, with the auction running through June 3rd. As of now there’s no direct estimate for how much the prob is expected to fetch, but taking a look at past Star Wars auctions, we’d be willing to bet it lands somewhere in six figures.
