Brace yourselves Crash Team Racing fans, it looks like a remaster may be on the way

Playing older games has become quite a popular hobby over the last few years. For this reason it has become very common practice for game developers to not only re-release once-popular games, but sometimes even give them a facelift. If Crash Team Racing is one of the games that you have found yourself longing to play again, you will be relieved, and perhaps even ecstatic, to hear that a remaster is likely to be announced in the near future.

History

Crash Team Racing was released in North America on September 30th, 1999. That’s nearly 20 years ago. It made its debut on the original PlayStation and in many ways was in direct competition with Nintendo’s smash-hit Mario Kart series.

Back in 1999, Mario Kart 64 had already been out for a several years and was the inspiration for many racing games at the time. Crash Team Racing was no exception. Like Mario Kart, the selection of usable characters in Crash Team Racing was comprised of familiar options from one of PlayStation’s most popular game series, Crash Bandicoot.

Hint of an upcoming remaster

Hollie Bennett, a Channel Manager at PlayStation Access, is whom we have to thank for an early hint at the upcoming announcement. Although Hollie’s tweet was not direct, the body contained the text “So….uh….these just arrived at my house. Any ideas? 😂🤔” along with an image of two familiar dice that typically hang in Crash’s cart and a note stating, “Sliding into the Game Awards on 6/12… – Anonymous”.

Exclusivity

When people tend to think of classic games, Nintendo is quite often the company that comes to mind. Microsoft’s Xbox isn’t quite old enough to gain a lot of hype when re-releasing old games, so that leaves us with PlayStation being the only major player left at the table to compete in this manner.

For this reason, it is very likely that this game will be exclusive to PlayStation and potentially limited to the PS4 if the rumored remaster brings substantial graphics improvements with it. That being said, there is always the potential for it to make a debut on smartphones, like Nintendo has been doing with some of its games.

Release timeframe

It is likely that the game will not be released at the awards, but simply announced in an official capacity. Gameplay footage and potentially a live demo would be played at that time.

While you’re waiting, now is a better time than ever to pick up a PlayStation Classic. (You can read our review of it here, by the way.) Hopefully that’ll help you get a temporary retro fix until we know more. You could also grab an original copy of Crash Team Racing on Amazon for a hefty chunk of money.
