The US Amazon Appstore will turn 3 this Saturday, March 22nd, and to commemorative this occasion, Amazon will launch a 2-week gift giving campaign for its customers. Beginning this week, Amazon will slash up to 60% off “some of the most popular titles in the store.”

The discounts will also extend to in-app purchases:

As an added bonus, for a limited time, customers who buy in-app items within select titles including Asphalt 8, Animal Voyage, Kingdoms of Camelot, The Hobbit, Sonic Dash, World at Arms and Despicable Me: Minion Rush will receive 50% back on the purchase price in the form of Amazon Coins.

Update (3/13 8:30 am): Amazon is now boldly owning the increases with an announcement on its homepage (above).

Effective April 17th, Amazon Prime annual membership rates will increase for the first time ever. Regular accounts will jump from $79 to $99 and Student accounts will go from $39 to $49.

The announcement quietly trickled out as an email to some members and can be found tucked away in a Prime help document. Rumors of a potential rate increase have been swirling since Amazon CFO Tom Szkutak broached on the subject during an earnings call in January. If you’re a current member and up for renewal be sure to re-up before the rates increase on 4/17! New members can start a 30-day free trial within the next 7 days to secure the lower rate. (smart move).

This is a definite case of ‘last but not least.’ As strictly an online marketplace, Amazon doesn’t have to print traditional ads and thus is less susceptible to failing victim of early ad leaks like we’ve seen from so many of its competitors. Early this morning Amazon finally shared with the world its plans for the Black Friday holiday shopping season.

Often considered the ‘holy grail’ for Black Friday shoppers, Amazon traditionally knocks-out the competition by offering deeply discounted Lightning deals in rapid succession. This year its upping the ante once again by promising new deals as often as every 10 minutes along with scheduled daily deals. Be sure to follow our social networks closely as that’s where we will be sharing the absolute best Lightning deals as they happen: Twitter, RSS Feed, Facebook, Google+.

Update: Amazon just just announced Sunday delivery for Prime members in New York, and LA with coverage expanding in 2014. Just another reason why Prime makes sense for frequent Amazon shoppers.

Amazon has quietly restructured their free shipping policy to only apply to orders of at least $35, an increase of $10 over the previous threshold of $25. Clearly it won’t affect high-priced items, but it can increase the price of smaller items substantially depending on the number of items ordered. This makes an Amazon Prime membership even more valuable.

We considered Prime a ‘no-brainer’ before and yesterday’s policy change only laminates our beliefs even further. Prime members receive free 2-day shipping on millions of items offered by Amazon direct, and deeply discounted 1-day shipping options. Shipping savings alone (especially during the holidays) can justify the price of a Prime membership, but members can also enjoy unlimited streaming of 41,000 movies and TV shows, and over 350,000 Kindle books for free.

Amazon Prime is a yearly $79 membership, but you can try it out free for 30 days. Student discounts are also available. You could also opt to simply ‘pad’ your orders to meet the $35 minimum, but you’d probably be able to pay for a Prime membership with that extra money spent throughout the year. Bottom line is that you are going to need to slightly alter your buying habits on Amazon to receive free shipping and we think opting for a Prime membership is the way to go.
