Target matching $49 iPhone 5c deal offered by Walmart, BestBuy, & others starting Sunday

Site default logo image

It wasn’t long after the device’s launch that retailers began offering discounts on Apple’s new colorful iPhone 5c. The device was supposed to hit retail for $99, but Walmart, BestBuy and RadioShack quickly dropped down to $79 on the usual two-year contract and then eventually to just $49. As it did with the $79 deal, Target has informed us that this weekend it will begin matching the $49 deal offered by other retailers through its Target Mobile centers in over 1,500 of its stores across the country. As usual, it will also offer an additional 5 percent off for customers with a Target REDcard.

iPad 2 16GB WiFi $349 (13% savings), 4th generation iPad $449 (10% savings), more

Site default logo image

UPDATE: The iPad’s on Ebay have sold out

UPDATE: Ebay is now offering the 4th Gen. iPad (16GB Wi-Fi) in black or white for only $429.99 shipped. This is $20 less than Walmart’s deal for the same condition (NEW) iPad.

Walmart is rolling back prices on every in-stock iPad 2 and Retina 4th generation iPad while supplies last. This deal nets you a 16GB WiFi iPad 2 for just $349 (13% savings) or a 4th generation iPad for $449 (10% savings)

We typically see a couple $50 price drops over the course of a month (typically as an eBay Daily Deal), but a sizable discount for iPad 2 is certainly much more rare. Jumping up to a 4th generation iPad will get you a beautiful Retina display, faster A6X processor, the new Lightning connector and other performance bumps. If you can get by without those upgrades the iPad 2 is still a capable tablet.

Sale prices are available for multiple storage capacities, colors, and WiFi/cellular models. Browse the entire selection here.

We knew Virgin Mobile was launching the iPhone 5s and 5C today but we weren’t expecting a $100 off starting price. That’s what’s on offer today from the Sprint subsidiary (Sprint will also knock off $100 the subsidized plans if you are a new customer – so much for loyalty benefits).

Virgin’s plans are the least expensive out there, especially considering they include unlimited data and start at $30/month.

Update: The 16GB is now sold out but you can grab a 32GB model for $639 with free shipping.

Apple is now shipping new iMacs, but savvy buyers should hold off just a bit longer

Site default logo image

Apple quietly updated their entire iMac lineup yesterday and they are pretty much the only game in town currently shipping the new desktop computers. This spells trouble for savvy buyers looking for a deal. It will take a week or so for authorized resellers (Best Buy, Newegg, B&H, etc) to stock each iMac model and only then will we start to see any sort of appreciable discount. It should be noted that MacMall is currently showing a $5 discount across the board but they are not specifying ship times. Amazon is also offering preorders.

Authorized resellers typically offer the best deals thanks to potential tax savings (at the time of purchase) and a higher propensity to offer discounts as way to be competitive. We saw $50 discounts only a month after the new Haswell MacBook Airs were released, so it shouldn’t be too long until the new iMacs see a price drop.

If you simply hold of purchasing a new iMac it is best to go directly through Apple and use any discounts that may apply to you (education, military, corporate, etc). If you are planning to add AppleCare to your new iMac be sure to grab it from an authorized reseller as their prices typically trump Apple direct.

Valve announces Steam Machines hardware beta for SteamOS

Site default logo image

Screen Shot 2013-09-25 at 1.02.04 PM

Earlier this week Valve made the first of three big announcements being teased on its website with the introduction of SteamOS: a Linux-based, open and freely licensable operating system that will run any number of devices and deliver the Steam experience in the living room. Today the company announced the second part of the puzzle with the launch of a hardware beta program for “Steam Machines” that will run the operating system:

Entertainment is not a one-size-fits-all world. We want you to be able to choose the hardware that makes sense for you, so we are working with multiple partners to bring a variety of Steam gaming machines to market during 2014, all of them running SteamOS.

Valve has designed a “high-performance prototype” and it will ship 300 of the boxes to Steam users for free in order to test the platform:

While these products are still in development, we need your help. As always, we believe the best way to ensure that the right products are getting made is to let people try them out and then make changes as we go. We have designed a high-performance prototype that’s optimized for gaming, for the living room, and for Steam. Of course, it’s also completely upgradable and open.

The company is accepting sign-ups for the beta program until October 25. Here’s how to apply:

Roku announces refreshed lineup of devices starting at $50: Roku LT, Roku 1 and Roku 2

Site default logo image

Roku has just announced a refreshed line up of devices, that includes updated models of its lower end streaming boxes. While the Roku 3 has been leading the way in the set-top box market place alongside the Apple TV, today the company announced the new Roku LT as well as the Roku 1 and Roku 2 which will replace the Roku HD and Roku 2 XD (via Wired).

The new models will come along with all the content the boxes normally come with, including access to over 1000 different content channels or apps from within the Roku Channel Store. With access to apps like Amazon Instant Video and Crackle, many feel this is where the platform carries an interesting advantage over Apple TV.

Another interesting addition to the system is the M-Go video service partnership the company has now announced. It appears as though Roku is stepping into the content space without having to implement its own content service. With M-Go, users can rent or purchase movies and TV Shows with the purchases connected to your existing Roku account.

Pre-orders are available now for the new Roku boxes on the official site and through Amazon, with units expected to hit store shelves in October. The 720p Roku LT starts at $50, the 1080p Roku 1 will be available for $60 and the $80 Roku 2 comes with 1080p, dual-band wireless options, and a slick little headphone jack in the remote. Even though the new models don’t come with the motion-control remote and the Ethernet port like the Roku 3 (which is currently $5 off on Amazon), the company has added composite input options to make up for it.

Roundup: the best Apple-certified (MFi) Lightning cables and other accessories in various lengths/colors/styles

Site default logo image

Apple’s newest mobile operating system, iOS7, brings great new features and a beautiful design but unfortunately it has also rendered many 3rd party Lightning accessories useless. Apple’s Made For iPhone program certifies that accessories are safe to charge and sync your Apple devices. Each Lightning accessory even has a tiny chip that certifies the accessory as MFi. There has been a constant cat and mouse game with Apple and 3rd party companies who attempt to circumvent this certification. These same companies promise future compatibility with iOS7 but  it is hardly worth it anymore to buy these cables to save a few bucks. There are dozens of solid MFi options which offer Apple reliability and terrific value.

Head below for the best MFi (Made For iPhone) certified Lightning cables on the market.

In general we love the Amazon Basics Lightning cables which are fully MFi compliant, come in 3 different lengths and get absolutely stellar reviews from past purchasers. We do periodically see prices as low as $9 on bulk packaged Apple official cables, so be sure to follow 9to5Toys to keep up to date with the latest deals: TwitterRSS FeedFacebookGoogle+. If you can’t wait and have to have Apple official cables your best bet is at Amazon. Keep in mind that 3rd party companies are now making MFi extended battery cases. In fact, you can grab a 2-port USB car charger and Lightning cable for nearly the same price Apple charges for just the cable.

Update (7/30 8:15am): Belkin MIXIT↑ metallic Lightning cables are available in gold, silver, and gray (just like your iPhone) and feature a more durable braided cable.

Best overall value: Amazon Basics $14 w/ free shipping for Prime members/orders exceeding $25 or 3′ Monprice cable (black or white): $12 + $1.83 shipping

Best colored options: iFrogz by ZAGG, available in 7 colors $19 w/ free shipping (no longer available)

Best coiled cable: 4′ Griffin $25 + $3.50 shipping

Best looking: Moshi premium aluminum $20 w/ free shipping

Best extra-long cable: 6′ Amazon Basics cable for $15 w/ free shipping for Prime members/orders exceeding or 6′ Monoprice (black or white) $12.78 + $2 shipping

Update (7/16 2:30pm): Save 25% on Nomad’s new carabiner, key & credit card sized MFi Lightning cables

Honorable mentions:

Update (8/22 2:00pm): Monoprice now offers a MFi Lightning keychain w/ stowaway 6-inch cable for $14.99.

Car Chargers: There are a couple ways to get Lightning charging while on-the-go. The most low-cost and easiest way is to simply plug a loose MFi Lightning cable (from above) into a built-in USB port in your car. If your car doesn’t come equipped with a USB port the next best option is your cigarette lighter. I recommend buying a loose USB car charger, 10 watt preferred for quick charge, for maximum flexibility. You can plug any USB cable in there and charge a multitude of devices. The total cost is also lower because you can use the cable that came with your device. The other option is a car charger with bulit-in Lightning cable. This option is less flexible but makes it easier because the cable is not detachable.

Our picks for the best MFi Lightning car charging solutions:

Loose USB car charger: Belkin Car Charger 2.1 AMP/10 Watts $14 (Amazon direct)

Charger w/ built-in cable: Griffin PowerJolt SE $25 + $3.50 shipping

Loose charger and cable combo: AmazonBasics Lightning cable + 2-port USB car charger $19 w/ free shipping – Same price as a standalone Lightning cable from Apple!

Apple iOS device sales: iPad 64GB 3G: $180, iPod touch 32GB 4th-gen: $170, 5th Gen: $259

Site default logo image

Some solid deals from around the web on Apple’s iOS products, the lowest we’ve seen for these configs…

First up, Cowboom has a used iPad 64GB with AT&T 3G for $179.99 with free shipping. That’s by far the lowest price we’ve ever seen on a 64GB iPad with 3G. This would make a great kids’ iPAd loaded up with videos or a kiosk.

Next, OneSaleaDay Wireless has a 32GB “new open box” iPod touch 4th Generation for $169.99 shipped. This is an all time low for a 32GB 4th generation which Apple replaced with a 5th generation a few months ago.

Finally, step up to the current iPod touch with a 32GB iPod touch with the same “new, open box” offer from Ebay for $258.89

Apple iPod Shuffle 4th gen. 2GB (Refurb.) $24 w/ free in-store pickup or $5 shipping (Reg. $49 new)

Update: Sold out!  Don’t miss out next time.  Follow 9to5Toys for all the latest deals… TwitterRSS FeedFacebookGoogle+

Walmart is offering a refurbished Apple iPod Shuffle 4th gen. 2GB for just $24 with free in-store pickup or about $5 shipping to have it sent directly to your doorstep. That is easily the best price we have ever seen for any iPod Shuffle. As a further price comparison, the current 5th generation iPod shuffle retails for $49 (Amazon charges $46). The only real difference between the 4th and 5th gen shuffles are the colors offered.

In my opinion, the iPod Shuffle is the ultimate workout music player. It features convenient (clickable!) physical buttons and a built-in clip so you can easily attach to any part of your clothing. 2GB is large enough to fit up to 500 songs, which is plenty long enough to get you through any workout. Deal is currently available for blue, green, purple, and slate colors.

LifeProof’s new protective nuud case for iPad mini now available

Site default logo image

Popular smartphone and tablet protective case maker LifeProof has just dropped a brand new nuud case for iPad mini. The case is now available for $120 with free shipping from LifeProof (which is about the street price for their bigger waterproof iPad cases).

Like its previous nuud cases, the iPad mini version will bring the company’s Screenless Technology that uses a compression lock system to keep your device protected from water, dust particles and shock damage, without the need of obtrusive screen covers etc. The case is built to survive a drop of up to 4 ft., exceeding military specifications for shock and vibration protection, according to LifeProof. As for water damage, your device can be submerged underwater at up to 6.6 ft. for one hour.

nüüd protects iPad mini from plunges and fumbles while keeping the screen open for direct touch. That’s right, you can touch the touchscreen — because touchscreen should be touched! And, the barely-there design is so slim and sleek, you won’t notice it’s there, until you’re glad it is

Even with all that protection all the buttons, ports and other functionality are completely accessible. The rear camera is protected with an anti-reflective optical glass lens to ensure protection and picture quality. Additionally, there is a shoulder strap included (seen below) and a portfolio cover is now available for it in black and gray at $40. Other accessories LifeProof will be launching soon include a floating LifeJacket for $60 and a mounting cradle for $50.

New LifeProof nuud case for iPad mini: $120
