Earlier this year, during one of its Direct presentations, Nintendo teased a series of remakes along with some DLC for its new Switch titles. After introducing us to Luigi in Super Mario Odyssey, Nintendo announced the next main DLC pack for Mario + Rabbids featuring Donkey Kong. We caught a brief story trailer back in January, and today we are getting the first major gameplay footage for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle: Donkey Kong Adventure.
After an exciting unveil, Ubisoft and Nintendo finally unleashed Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle on the public in the summer of 2017. Suffice to say, many were skeptical of the character cross-over and gameplay mechanics at first. All things considered, it doesn’t sound like it would be an easy task to blend the world of the most iconic characters in gaming history with Rabbids and then use XCOM-style strategic combat. Nonetheless, the game went on to achieve record-setting first week sales and was one of the best-selling third-party titles on Switch at the time.
This isn’t just a skin or adding Donkey Kong as a playable character in the main game either, this is a hearty chunk of new story and more.
We are getting an entire new island to explore that appears to be organized into 4 separate environments. But most importantly, an all-new baddie to take on in Rabbid Kong. Donkey Kong, Rabbid Peach, and a “moody new Rabbid hero” by the name of Rabbid Cranky will have to team up and journey across the new island to put Rabbid Kong in his place. DK will have his own set of skills as well including boomerang-style bananas that can hit multiple targets in succession, the ability to throw cover at people and some kind of bongo-playing trance spell.
The worst part of all this is that Nintendo still hasn’t given us an official release date yet. Last we heard it was “coming this spring”. But if that is to remain true (and it basically already isn’t), this thing is going to have to drop very soon.
Nintendo is set to for another livestream-only event for E3 2018 once again. It is scheduled to kick off on June 12th at 9:00am PT. One thing is for sure, we are going to be hearing about loads of new Switch games if any of the rumors and speculation is on point. Super Smash Bros. for Switch is basically a must and many are also expecting a main line Pokémon title to make an appearance as well. Keep it locked to Toys for the biggest announcements over the next few weeks.
