Hive View Outdoor arrives with attractive design… for a security camera

Hive View Outdoor

This morning Hive introduced its new View Outdoor Security Camera. Not only is this is the brand’s first foray into weatherproof cameras, this new release arrives on the scene with a fairly attractive design. As you’d expect, the Hive View Outdoor features full 1080p support, motion detection, and the usual control panel of smartphone features. A fairly notable sub-$200 price tag with the option for pre-order discounts has us thinking this security camera may give Nest, Arlo, and others competition this holiday season.

Hive View Outdoor security camera unveiled

Hive has an ever-expanding selection of cameras and accessories, but it has clearly been lacking an outdoor solution. The new View Outdoor arrives with a similar design to its indoor sibling with a more robust outer shell to protect it from the elements.

There is certainly a lot to be excited about when it comes to the Hive View Outdoor, but one notable downer is the lack of a built-in battery. Each camera ships with a mount but requires access to an additional outlet or power source. There’s no solar option like Arlo has or a built-in battery pack like Ring. This isn’t a deal-breaker, but the lack of flexibility here will be an issue for some. The wireless capabilities of those aforementioned alternatives make those cameras much more approachable for beginners.

Hive View Outdoor delivers motion sensors and smartphone control

Security cameras on the market today are largely broken up into two different categories: those with continual monitoring, like Nest IQ, and those without. It’s something worth carefully considering when comparing different options on the market.

Hive View Outdoor, like many other cameras, only starts recording when motion is detected. That means any activity leading up to the camera being triggered is not captured. While that’s not always an issue, missing out on a few key moments of footage may be the difference between capturing an intruder or not.

A full 24 hours of cloud storage is available with purchase and Hive offers additional DVR plans if you’d like to access recordings for up to 30 days. The inclusion of any free storage is good, but it’s sure is tough to beat Arlo’s included 7-day DVR feature.

Pre-order Hive View Outdoor today

The new Hive View Outdoor security camera is available for pre-order today at Hive and shortly thereafter over at Amazon. Discounts are available if you purchase multiple units. Hive is expecting to be shipping the new View Outdoor by the second week of December.
