A brand new Lemmings game is out. Sony came out of nowhere to announce the new free mobile game to just about everyone’s surprise. The classic puzzle franchise has been around in some way or other for nearly three decades now and it’s making a festive return just in time for the holidays.
Brand New Lemmings Game
Lemmings originally debuted back in 1991 on the Amiga and was published by Psygnosis. After a series of ports, sequels, spin-offs, and over 20 million units sold, the tiny little creatures are making a triumphant return on iOS and Android.
If you’re wondering why Sony is announcing a game for someone else’s platform on its official blog, it’s because it acquired Psygnosis back in 1993. After the company folded, the license to Lemmings remained in Tokyo with Sony’s Computer Entertainment division. A remake by Team 17 of the original made it to several Sony hardware releases over the years and now we are getting a brand new Lemmings game for mobile.
The game features a similar puzzle structure as previous titles but with “thousands of levels” that are “procedurally generated” with “carefully curated” content. Special attention has been paid to this design from the ground up for the mobile game as well. According to developer Serkan Hassan, it was designed to be played comfortably with one hand in portrait orientation.
We worked tirelessly on touch controls, removing secondary elements like camera control and making it as simple for players to assess the level, plan a strategy and execute it.
The cuddly little guys are on a journey to find a new home and take to the stars to do so. Players will encounter loads of game worlds themed after their destinations as you attempt to rid these regions of hazards in order to transform them into a little Lemmings oasis.
On your travels, you’ll encounter and rescue a variety of unique Lemmings, each with a distinctive look. These are the tribes, groups of themed characters with big rewards for players who can complete them.
Download it Now for FREE
The new Lemmings game is available now for free on the App Store for iOS and Google Play for Android devices. There do appear to be in-app purchases here but Hassan noted that the game “can be played entirely for free” on the PlayStation blog. Early App Store reviews look positive as well.
