The latest Sony WH-1000XM6 Noise Canceling Wireless Headphones have been one of the more popular over-ear releases of the last year or so. But today Sony its marking a decade of the 1000X series with a special new model known as 1000X The Collexion alongside the new The Sandstone XM6 headphones colorway.
New Sony 1000X The Collexion launch today
The previously leaked over-ear headphones do carry over some of the tech from the mostly lauded 1000XM6, but are indeed an all-new set of cans with a premium build quality and more of a focus on the audiophile hi-res listening experience.
Launching today in celebration of 10 years of Sony 1000X series headphones, the new premium Collexion set deliver “elevated design, next-level comfort, and richly immersive sound tuning shaped by everything the 1000X series has learned over the past 10 years.” And let’s hope all of this is indeed the case, because this is an expensive set of headphones.
New Sony 1000X The Collexion now available directly from Sony and at Best Buy

As far as the build goes, Collexion features crafted metal accents with a matte sandblasted texture and hand-polished gloss elements. Sony says each piece is finished by “skilled artisans.” A series of integrated metal buttons is joined by a soft vegan leather that apparently took two years to develop due to its unique tactile finish. Available in Platinum and Black colorways, they are apparently the most comfortable headphones it has ever produced.

Alongside the all-new magnetic case that comes with the headphones (seen above), the Collexion features an all-new custom unidirectional carbon driver Sony says delivers its very best sound quality to date. The XM6 still feature its best noise cancelling tech though, largely due to the seal and physical design – the Collexion does have ANC and it is more or less the same tech, but the physical design ensures the XM6 remain best in class on the cancelation front.
It’s really all about the premium build and sound on the Collexion – Sony says they are the first headphones to feature DSEE Ultimate, which uses ”Edge-AI to upscale compressed digital music files in real time, restoring lost details and dynamic range.” They also sport 360 Reality Audio Upmix action across three models: music, cinema, or game, controllable via the Listening Mode button.
All-told, this is Sony’s high-end anniversary 1000X set of headphones, specifically geared towards premium sound and build quality. They also have a price to match as they are launching today at $649.99 shipped in the US. For most folks, especially those who are looking towards the brand’s best ANC, the XM6 you can land at under $400 on sale at Amazon are likely more than enough.
