Microsoft is making a pretty interesting move to help preserve physical XBOX game libraries as the industry continues shifting toward digital. The company has now officially announced a new disc-to-digital feature for XBOX, letting players claim a digital entitlement for supported physical XBOX games. XBOX Insiders will be the first to try it starting this month, with a wider rollout planned for the coming months. More details below.
XBOX is bridging physical and digital game ownership
This new feature, in case you’re wondering, works with most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games. You’ll essentially insert a supported disc into an XBOX One or Series X console, launch the game, and claim a digital entitlement tied to that physical copy. Once that’s done, you’ll be able to access the digital benefits attached to the title, including XBOX Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where supported. Microsoft says the physical disc will continue to work exactly as it does today.

The really interesting part here is how Microsoft is handling ownership. With this, the digital entitlement is tied to the specific disc, rather than permanently locking the game to the first account that claims it. That means the entitlement can move between accounts if the physical game changes hands, which should preserve things like lending, trading, and reselling instead of turning every claimed disc into a one-time digital redemption code.
Microsoft says it plans to start with thousands of games across XBOX history, though not every title will be supported from day one. It’s worth noting that publishers will have control over whether their games participate, so expect the list to expand over time rather than every compatible Xbox disc suddenly working on August 31.
This move is said to be a part of the company’s broader push around game preservation and making sure existing libraries can move forward as hardware and distribution formats change. That matters quite a bit with the next Xbox generation on the horizon, especially if future systems continue to move away from built-in disc drives.
The timing is notable too. Sony recently confirmed that new PlayStation games released after January 2028 will no longer be manufactured on disc, while Microsoft is taking a vastly different approach for now by giving existing physical Xbox collections a path into its increasingly digital ecosystem.
This could end up being one of the more useful preservation features Microsoft has introduced in a while for folks sitting on years of Xbox discs. The first real-world test starts with Xbox Insiders on August 31, and we should get a much better idea then of exactly which games work and how smoothly the entitlement system handles lending, swapping, and moving between devices.
