Roku announces refreshed lineup of devices starting at $50: Roku LT, Roku 1 and Roku 2

Site default logo image

Roku LT-Roku 1-Roku 2-new models-announced-01Roku has just announced a refreshed line up of devices, that includes updated models of its lower end streaming boxes. While the Roku 3 has been leading the way in the set-top box market place alongside the Apple TV, today the company announced the new Roku LT as well as the Roku 1 and Roku 2 which will replace the Roku HD and Roku 2 XD (via Wired).

The new models will come along with all the content the boxes normally come with, including access to over 1000 different content channels or apps from within the Roku Channel Store. With access to apps like Amazon Instant Video and Crackle, many feel this is where the platform carries an interesting advantage over Apple TV.

Another interesting addition to the system is the M-Go video service partnership the company has now announced. It appears as though Roku is stepping into the content space without having to implement its own content service. With M-Go, users can rent or purchase movies and TV Shows with the purchases connected to your existing Roku account.

Roku LT-Roku 1-Roku 2-M-Go-movies-01

Pre-orders are available now for the new Roku boxes on the official site and through Amazon, with units expected to hit store shelves in October. The 720p Roku LT starts at $50, the 1080p Roku 1 will be available for $60 and the $80 Roku 2 comes with 1080p, dual-band wireless options, and a slick little headphone jack in the remote. Even though the new models don’t come with the motion-control remote and the Ethernet port like the Roku 3 (which is currently $5 off on Amazon), the company has added composite input options to make up for it.

Steam Family Sharing lets you share and borrow full game libraries, launches next week

Steam-Family Sharing-beta-announcement-01Steam, arguably the best PC, Mac and Linux gaming delivery service available, is getting even better. Valve has announced the “Steam Family Sharing” feature, similar to the now ditched Xbox One function Microsoft initially announced, that will allow users to share their library of games with friends and family.

Once someone shares their Steam library with you, you’ll be able to play and download the titles as much as you want and even get access to your own cloud saves and achievements. The service is enabled by a simple authorization process.

There are a few small limitations here, a single Steam library can not be accessed at the same time by two users. The lender holds precedence and can access his or her games at anytime. If the lender decides to access their games while another authorized individual is using them, the other friend will get the boot with two choices to either just quit the game or purchase it themselves.

“Our customers have expressed a desire to share their digital games among friends and family members, just as current retail games, books, DVDs, and other physical media can be shared…Family Sharing was created in direct response to these user requests.”

Additionally, there will be a limit of 10 authorized users per library, again very similar to what Microsoft originally announced for the Xbox One. Another caveat is that not all the titles available on Steam will support Family Sharing, due to technical issues, games that require third party authorization keys, accounts or some kind of subscription will not be supported.

The new feature will be made available sometime next week, in limited beta. Head below for more info on the Family Sharing service and on how to get into the beta.
