PortaPresso is an iPhone-connected portable espresso maker that does it all

Coffee is a growing trend it seems. I just ordered my first bean grinder and french press to start moving away from pre-ground Sam’s Club coffee and K-Cups. One area I’ve never really ventured into before, however, is making espresso at home, let alone on the road.

PortaPresso does just that, though. This portable espresso maker grinds beans, boils water, and even froths milk so you can have the best espresso possible without the big and bulky machine.

Making coffee anywhere is fairly simple, as you just make water hot, grind beans (or bring pre-ground) and pour the water through a filter with the ground coffee in it. It’s that simple, and boom, you have a nice hot cup of joe. Espresso is different, though, as it needs pressure to brew properly.

PortaPresso claims to be the world’s first portable Co2 canister and Lithium-Ion battery-operated espresso machine. The battery and Co2 enable PortaPresso to grind and compact the coffee, boil water, extract the coffee, and heat/froth milk in a single device.

This unique machine can hold enough milk, water, and coffee beans to make up to three coffees. PortaPresso is also smart-connected so you can control the coffee type with your phone. When ready, it heats the water to the “perfect” temperature of 98° and does the rest magically. See below for how PortaPresso makes the “perfect portable espresso.”

  1. Fill The Porta Presso with fresh beans, milk, and tap water at the start of your day or trip into the appropriate clearly labeled slots. The Porta Presso will hold enough milk, water and coffee beans to make up to three coffees every preparation. The milk and water level will be physically visible.
  2. When you are ready to brew, twist the planetary grinder 3 times to grind your fresh beans and twist the dial 90° to compact your grinds.
  3. Turn The Porta Presso on, you will then choose your type of coffee via the built-in LCD screen on downloadable smart device app and The Porta Presso will do the magic for you, boiling the water to the required extraction temperature of 98°, applying the optimal pressure of 17 bar the coffee will be reluctant to pour for the first 9 seconds to ensure a rich flavour.
  4. The total pour time will be approximately 27 seconds before the milk that has been heated to 65° (unless customized by the user) is added and the appropriate amount of froth achieved.

If you ever find yourself in a place where you have no coffee beans to grind but have pre-ground beans on hand, PortaPresso works just fine with those as well. And to make cleanup after you brew easy, PortaPresso is even 100% dishwasher safe.

PortaPresso is estimated to ship in April 2018 and starts at $165. The company behind PortaPresso says that all Indiegogo backer perk levels are extremely discounted from the future retail pricing, so if you want to get in on this new trend, now’s the time.
