3D printer Stories April 10

Not too long ago I bought my first 3D printer. After months of tinkering, I wrote a post covering some of the best 3D printers out there for folks wanting to get started. When I want to build something, I generally search existing designs on sites like Thingiverse and can often find something that suits my needs.

For the times when this is not the case, I have begun building my own designs using several different 3D modeling apps. While this can be fun, it’s also time consuming. With the release of Scan Dimension’s SOL 3D Scanner, there is now an affordable way to quickly mimic existing objects. expand full story

With a build plate that supports prints up to 8.7 x 8.7 x 9.8-inches in size, you’ll have plenty of room to build whatever comes to mind. Rated 4.1/5 stars.

3D printers enable us to create solutions to problems that we would otherwise have to search Amazon for and perhaps never quite find. Before AirPods existed, I ordered a Quirky Wrapster to make carrying headphones less of a mess. You can tell from the low review count that the product never garnered huge success, but it could easily be classified as something that should exist, even if it can easily fly under the radar. With today’s new DigiLab 3D40 FLEX 3D Printer announcement from Dremel, the company inches us closer to a creative and headache-free experience that allows us to make things that no one else is.

Most of the leading 3D printers use ABS plastic which can’t be reused again. This is a problem because plastic is not the most environmentally-friendly material to waste. The ClayXYZ Printer now being funded on KickStarter uses the ordinary run of the mill clay (essentially, clay is just mud and just as biodegradable). You can dissolve it in water and reuse the material over and over again. That’s pretty environment-friendly and cost-effective too.

Just load the clay, download the model and click start to enjoy the process of creation. You’ll be able to use ClayXYZ to print out a cup of your own design, and fire it in a kiln. After that, the cup can be directly used to drink water.

In hopes of standing out from the pack, a new product is utilizing a multifaceted robotic arm that can handle 3D printing in addition to milling, laser engraving and electronics assembly. Even better, Makerarm is pretty good looking too.

Make your own miniature 3D printed, Raspberry Pi-powered Game Boy emulator

An interesting 3D printed, raspberry Pi-powered Game Boy emulator has popped up on Thingiverse recently. The DIY project combines the versatility of the small Raspberry Pi computers with some intelligent 3D printing to create what is essentially a mini portable Game Boy/SNES handheld console.

At just 75% the size, it has a much smaller footprint than the original Game Boy, and is just a fraction of the size of the giant Raspberry Pi-powered Game Boy emulator we detailed previously.

Packed with a Raspberry Pi A+, a slightly modded controller set-up (inspired by the SNES), and a 5V smartphone battery pack, the 3D printer files for the case and D-pad are provided on Thingiverse.

While you’ll need a 3D printer, a basic knowledge of the Raspberry Pi universe and a bit of ingenuity, it is possible to put one of these suckers together yourself. The instructions aren’t exactly detailed, but they do provide the necessary 3D printer files and a basic rundown of how to put it together.
