Update (2/11 3:15pm): OOS But A4C Has the iPad Air 16GB with LTE for $299.99 shipped, an all time low
Quick Ship Electronics (99.3% rated seller) via eBay Daily Deals offers an open-box Apple iPad Air 32GB Wi-Fi in silver for $289.99 with free shipping. When it was originally released in 2013 it carried a list price of $599, but Apple is currently charging $389 for refurbished units.
The sellers detailed description of the iPad’s condition: “This item shows virtually no signs of use. It includes the original package (which may be lightly distressed) and the original OEM accessories. We include a free 1 year warranty with every item we sell.” Clearly it’s not brand new, but it’s $99 below Apple’s refurb. price, which we think that makes up for it not being factory fresh.
Olympus has announced a new smartphone lens that is a direct competitor to the Sony QX-series. The ‘Air’ has a 16MP sensor with Four Thirds capabilities as well as a shutter release button and microSD slot. It is powered by a lithium-ion battery and packs an autofocus system with 81-points of reference. It mounts directly to your smartphone adding greater zoom capabilities to your device. The Air communicates with your smartphone via WiFi and with its open-source API, it will be available in early March within Japan for ¥33,800 or roughly about $289, availability elsewhere is currently unknown.
As we head through February and into the Spring months, we will be seeing three new camera models from Olympus and Samsung. While they all offer different feature sets, these cameras continue to bring more pro-style attributes to the hobbyist photographer. Each one represents a different phase of photography ability dependent upon the needs of the shooter. While there have been many cameras announced by these companies we found the following to be of most interest.

Apple has selected Angry Birds Seasons (and Angry Birds Season HD) as the Free App of the Week. Typically going for up to $2.99, you can now download both the iPhone and iPad version for free. Both versions of the app combined have received a 4+ star rating from over 300,000 reviewers

This lightweight, sturdy keyboard case has well-spaced TruType keys that offer the movement and response of a laptop keyboard. Update (1/24 9:00am): @ericmata75 is our winner, thank you to everyone for entering our giveaway!
The story goes, as told by co-founder Andrew Allen, that Paper by FiftyThree started out of a love for analog products. That four Microsoft colleagues turned friends with the resources of a Fortune 500 company found a greater passion in a pencil, scissors…and paper. Often Andew, Georg Petschnigg, Jonathan Harris and Julian Walker would sit down and discuss their ideas, talking about possibilities that bounced around in their heads. These brainstorming sessions would always be recorded on a scrap, or coffee filter, napkin or Moleskin, notably they weren’t writing in Word or the like – they were writing everything out.
The feeling of analog products, the feel of cutting paper or dragging a pencil across paper. How do they bring that feeling to a digital world? It was at that point, they bunkered down in a 5th floor New York apartment and set out to re-imagine digital design. They set out to make Paper.

Update (1/23 11:46am): the discount code available in this post has now expired.
If you are an iMac user you like nice things. Reaching around to the back of your iMac every time you want to plug in a USB object is not nice. Sure there are options out there. You could drop $15 on a wrap around cord or buy a nice aluminum USB 3 hub (this nice Satechi 7 port is $40 or Powered Anker is $44 or many others have existed for awhile).
If you want something that looks like it came from Apple however, check out the iMacompanion. It is a single USB 3 port that carries the power and speed of the iMac’s USB 3 (also USB 2 compatible for older models) to the base of your iMac. It has a flat USB cord that will snake under your iMac and to the back USB port. All the instructions you need are in the following graphic and a 15% off offer follows:
The big thing here is the quality: the housing is 100% aluminum and it is designed to fit perfectly onto your iMac. Wiplabs is giving 9to5Toys readers a 15% discount when bought through Amazon using code 9to5Toys at checkout which knocks it down to $34 with $4.50 shipping (offer is good for a week)

Best Stop Deals via eBay Daily Deals offers the Apple iPad Leather Smart Cover for iPad 2/3/4 in a variety of colors for $14.99 shipped. A few specific notes on this deal: the Navy colored model is currently excluded from this pricing and these items will be shipped in bulk-packaging. Amazon has a variety of colors available as well for a few dollars more, the cream version is less expensive with Prime shipping (free trial). These are the best prices that we can currently find from a trusted retailer.
Typically we see these types of close-out pricing on the polyurethane version of the Smart Cover, so it is of particular note to see the leather cover. We’ve covered Apple products from Best Stop Deals in the past, they have a positive seller rating of 98.5% from over 72,000 customers.
These Smart Covers are designed to protect the front of your iPad screen, while doubling as a stand as well when rolled back. They magnetically cling to the side of the iPad, while the cover itself utilizes magnets within the device to snap shut when closing. Note that these smart covers are designed for iPad 2/3/4.
While they do make great window displays, they are not magical as they might seem.

Other apps in the bundle include Default Folder X (Reg. $35), VirusBarrier (Reg. $40), uBar (Reg. $20), Speedy (Reg. $20), TotalFinder (Reg. $18), CodeKit (Reg, $32) and more.

More from MacHeist:
When Apple created the Mac App Store, the idea was that a central repository to find and publish apps would benefit both the Mac users and developers. Several years since then, it’s become clear that it benefits neither.
Not only are demos a thing of the past for any app looking to publish on the Mac App Store, but updates that are sometimes critical are delayed by a broken and inconsistent review process. Those two issues are bad, but combined with the fact that independently developed apps have to follow a much stricter set of rules than Apple’s own apps, it’s clear that the only party benefiting from this is Apple.
In protest of this incredibly unfair arrangement, we’ve put together a bundle of 9 incredible apps that can’t be found on the Mac App Store, for just $14.99!
Apple is now offering MUJO as its Free App of the Week. The Oink Games developed puzzler is regularly listed at $1.99 and is now available to download for free on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Rated 4 stars from 37 ratings, this is the first the time the game has gone free since release.

Samsung has announced the latest addition to its line of desktop displays with the SE790C extra-wide curved 34-inch monitor. This follows up the 27-inch SD590C from September that started Samsung’s curved monitor endeavors. The 21:9 aspect ratio is able to handle a resolution of up to 3,440×1,4000 with a pixel density of roughly 110, which surpasses 1080p and compares favorably to the 34-inch LG UM95.
The SE790C is built for an “immersive and comfortable viewing experience” that also focuses on multi-tasking while maximizing the monstrous 34-inch display. Samsung claims that “all curves are not created equally”, touting a curve that aligns with the natural shape on a human eye ball. This allows for equal-distant viewing for peripheral vision as well which Samsung says makes it easier to see more of the screen at once.
Samsung is packing features that we’d expect to see in a flagship display offering, such as picture-in-picture, USB 3.0 and HDMI inputs. Pricing has not yet been announced, but we expect to see a follow-up with more information at CES in January where we’ll have a full team on site.
Samsung Electronics Introduces SE790C Curved Monitor for the Ultimate in Immersive and Comfortable Viewing
Samsung Electronics introduces its newest and most advanced curved monitor, model SE790C, delivering an enhanced immersive and comfortable viewing experience for multi-media entertainment and multi-tasking. Alongside an optimized curvature design, ultra-wide quad high definition (ULTRA-WQHD) resolution and a superior contrast ratio, the new 34-inch curved monitor SE790C offers enhanced productivity and entertainment functionality within a sophisticated and ergonomic design.
“All curves are not created equal. Samsung’s SE790C offers an industry-leading and award-winning curvature for a truly immersive, comfortable and differentiating viewing experience,” said Seoggi Kim, Senior Vice President, Visual Display Business, Samsung Electronics. “Combined with superior picture quality, productivity and entertainment-enhancing technology features, and design sophistication, our latest curved monitor delivers on our brand promise to push the limits of what display solutions and innovative technology can deliver.”
The innovative 3000R(curvature radius of 3,000mm) design of the SE790C provides a noticeably different viewing experience from traditional flat screen monitors and competitive curved monitors. Unlike flat screen monitors where the viewing distance differs from the center of the screen to the edges, the screen edges of the SE790C more closely match the natural curve of a viewer’s eyes. As a result, the SE790C creates a distortion-free viewing experience with less eye strain and enhanced comfort for viewer.
In fact, the curved monitor’s superior eye comfort has been validated by TÜV Rheinland, a leading international certification organization. The rigorous certification process involved an evaluation of the monitor’s color presentation, color uniformity, viewing angle, and curved space and flicker-free operation.
An edge-to-edge curve also enables panoramic-like viewing, creating a wider and fuller field of view, and a more immersive visual experience. The monitor’s optimal curved design creates a high 3D-like effect ratio that makes the screen seem larger than a flat screen of the same size. This 3D-like effect increases when depth becomes larger or the viewing distance becomes closer.
To ensure multi-media content can be enjoyed with the finest picture quality, clarity and intensity it deserves, the Samsung SE790C features a 21:9 aspect ratio and ULTRA-WQHD resolution of 3,440 by 1,440 pixels to deliver stunning picture quality.
Complemented by a wide viewing angle, the monitor’s best-in-class static contrast ratio of 3,000:1 and 300 cd/m2 typical brightness result in dynamic lighting and shading for lifelike pictures with deeper blacks, vivid colors and sharper detail. The extra-wide viewing angle of 178 degrees horizontally and vertically optimizes the viewing experience from any position and minimizes picture distortion.
An array of features take multi-tasking, gaming and movie watching to the next level. The SE790C comes equipped with Picture-by-Picture (PbP) and Picture-in-Picture (PiP) 2.0 functions for enhanced work efficiency. PbP allows users to easily connect two devices, such as a desktop, laptop, gaming device (Xbox, PlayStation, etc.) or Set-Top Box (STB), and view both simultaneously on the monitor without compromising screen real-estate. PiP 2.0 enables multi-tasking without the need to downscale content. The monitor also is equipped with four USB 3.0 super-charging ports to eliminate the need for a docking station and maintain 24/7 connectivity for all your devices.
The SE790C also offers a variety of entertainment-enhancing capabilities, including a unique game mode, high-quality stereo sound and fast response time. Using the game mode, the curved monitor intelligently detects changes in scenes by correcting blurry images, enhancing colors and altering contrast for improved visibility of in-game action. The monitor’s embedded 7-watt dual stereo speakers also deliver a high-quality stereo sound and a richer experience, while a response time of four milliseconds ensures gamers see even the fastest on-screen action clearly and smoothly without motion blur or ghosting.
Constructed from sophisticated metallic materials, the SE790C is designed with a clean and understated look that ensures nothing distracts viewers from the curved screen. The elegantly curved T-shaped, height-adjustable stand (HAS) and clean back with hidden VESA bracket support work together to enhance the monitor’s sophisticated and ergonomic design to maximize productivity and comfort.

Long gone are the days of a traditional movie renting experience. No longer do we have to travel for miles in the snow just to pick up a rental for movie night. Today we can scroll through the newest releases and watch them without leaving the couch. But if you’re like me, you still have people on your gift list stuck in the 1990’s, who are in desperate need of a digital wake up call.
Below, I have my favorite media streamers you still have time to give to people on your list.
eBay has the Apple Smart Cover for iPad mini & iPad mini 2nd gen (in bulk packaging) for only $16.99 shipped. That’s $22 off the regular price and the current lowest we could find. We saw them for $1 less at Best Buy at the beginning of this month for in-store pickup.
Snap the Smart Cover into place and it wakes up, stands up, and brightens up your iPad mini. It magnetically aligns for a perfect fit. It wakes and sleeps your iPad Mini on open and close. It’s a handy stand for reading, watching, and typing. And it’s a way to make your iPad Mini as personal on the outside as it is on the inside.

This week’s free app from Apple is Brushstroke. Designed to transform your photos into “paintings in one touch,” you can download the app for free on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Releasing back in March of this year for $2.99, the lowest we had seen the app go previously was $1 for about a week in April.
Head below for more details on what Brushstroke can do:
iPads need stands. Whether you’re watching videos, long-form typing, or making FaceTime calls, it’s a chore to hold the iPad upright for extended blocks of time. To address that need, Apple launched the first iPad with regular and keyboard docks, but quickly gave up on them in favor of simpler folding lids called Smart Covers.
If you’re looking for an iPad stand or dock, you can do better than that. We know because we’ve tested lots of options for Apple’s tablets. Following up on our guide to iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus docks, we’re looking today at the very best of what’s out there for every iPad, covering four broad categories: simple portable stands, simple desktop stands, cases with integrated stands, and charging docks.
