Luna smart mattress cover turns up the heat in bed and even triggers your morning coffee

If you are interested in a better sleep experience, but find the Sleep Cycle app or an expensive mattress aren’t the answer, you may want to check out the Luna smart mattress cover. What was born out of an Indiegogo campaign is set to become a reality later this year. Instead of re-making an entire mattress, that would ultimately prove to be very costly, Luna is a mattress cover that fits many beds. It is covered in sensors, which helps track your movement, sleeping habits and interacts with your data to monitor your overall health.

At an early-bird price of $179, the Luna mattress comes in at a very competitive price point. While I cannot say that I would pay $1,000+ for an entire smart mattress, the Luna appeals for its ability to interact with many of the smart devices I have, at a reasonable price. In addition to being a sleep tracker, Luna also heats your bed. It tracks your sleeping habits over time and warms your mattress ahead of your typical go-to-bed time. Each side of the mattress can be adjusted independently for a desired temperature. The sensors within Luna can monitor your heart rate, breathing rate and sleep cycle, taking note of this data over time to help create a better sleep experience.

Perhaps the biggest feature set of note is the Luna’s ability to intermingle with other technology you may own. It takes HealthKit data into account, ultimately cross-checking data to provide better knowledge of what makes you sleep well, or poorly. Additionally, it can interact with other smart devices such as Nest, WeMo or Hue, although some may require If This Then That along the way. Luna claims that upon settling in bed for the night, it will be able to trigger your lights to shut off, your door to lock and temperature to adjust. Likewise, in the morning your coffee will begin to brew when you awake.

While a smart mattress cover doesn’t necessarily scream cool or high tech, its ability to co-exist with other technology makes it something worth noting. As data collection becomes a more prevalent part of our digital lives, this smart mattress cover from Luna is a viable option to add to your home. Pre-order is available now at $179 for full and queen sizes, with a king mattress cover running $219. Luna expects to ship in August.
