Here’s a look at Sony’s new PlayStation 4/PSVR Gold Wireless Headset

(Update 3/6 8:35am): You can now grab the new Gold headset for $15 off today at Rakuten using code SAVE15.

Last week, Sony debuted its brand new DualShock 4 controller designs. Along with the previously released retro-style translucent variants, the new Midnight Blue and Black Steel options are already among some of my personal favorites in the collection. But Sony is continuing the new hardware announcements this week with a brand new Gold Wireless Headset for PlayStation 4 and PSVR…

Set to essentially replace the current generation Gold Wireless PS4 Headset, the updated model will deliver “enhanced comfort and performance”, according to Sony, and is set for release later this month.

The headset maintains everything you loved, while featuring a new sleek design with refined over-ear cushions that make it even more comfortable for long gaming sessions. The high fidelity 7.1 virtual surround sound intensifies the audio experience within compatible games. And the augmented noise-cancelling hidden microphones provide crisp, clear communication with your friends and teammates.

Compatible with PlayStation VR and “mobile devices”, it will include a 3.5mm audio cable along with its wireless transmission capabilities. Overall, it looks to be a more sleek and refined design with what Sony is referring to as enhanced ear cushions for long gaming sessions. While the headphones are certainly designed with PS4/Pro gamers in mind, Sony has made sure the new Gold Wireless fit on your head comfortably alongside that PSVR helmet.

You can expect the usual 7.1 virtual surround sound (for compatible games) as well as an array of external microphones. Sony said the “augmented noise-cancelling and hidden” microphones are perfect for both noise cancellation tasks and communication with fellow gamers online.

Sony’s Headset Companion app also provides some additional functionality and customization. Found on the PlayStation Network, Headset Companion isn’t anything to write home about, but it does offer up various listening/EQ modes fine-tuned for specific experiences. Some of which Sony says have been tweaked by “sound designers at your favorite game studios”, but you can also create your custom equalization curves. The app also works with the Silver, Platinum and Pulse Elite models.

While the previous gen model is now regularly available for around $88 or so on Amazon, the new Gold Wireless PS4 Headset will ship with the same $99 MSRP. According to Sony, we should see it hit store shelves in the US over the “next few weeks.”
