NBA 2K16 hits iOS and Android with new gameplay, controls and updated graphics

We’re under two weeks until the NBA season officially tips off and I cannot wait. There are so many questions that linger… Will the Warriors repeat? How good are the Spurs? Will Boogie Cousins hurt George Karl?

In the meantime, I’ll have to virtually ball out. Thankfully NBA 2K16 for mobile devices has hit and is ready to download for $7.99 on iOS and Android today. The console version dropped a few weeks back to rave reviews, so I’m looking forward to playing the handheld rendition.

This year’s game includes updated graphics, a new control system that is more in line with the console experience and a full featured MyCareer mode. You can take full control of your team with season modes, crafting your virtual line-up to your exact specifications. That means Paul George will have to play the four spot, whether he likes it or not!

Head below for a full description and more gameplay pictures.

Electric Jukebox doesn’t want to be Spotify or Chromecast, so what is it?

As if we needed another streaming service in our lives. Well, according to the new Electric Jukebox, we do. The space between our headphones has become a battleground for services like Spotify, Apple Music and Pandora. But for some, keeping track of all the features and monthly billing proves to be a bit much.

Instead of offering a streaming library across iOS, Android and other platforms with varying degrees of hardware compatibility, Electric Jukebox is rolling it all into one experience. Think Chromecast meets Spotify, kind of…

The BLOCKS modular smartwatch hit Kickstarter today and in just a few short hours it has flown past its initial $250,000 goal. There was a lot of hype initially surrounding its launch, which has proven to be well deserved.

BLOCKS was first teased back at CES with a promise of hitting the crowdfunding circuit this summer. The build-your-own watch offers a unique alternative to Apple Watch and Android Wear examples that are largely limited in function by their software capabilities. Although it took a little more time than originally expected, today’s response has been through the roof. Head below for more details.

Koto’s smart sensors track your home’s health and can even forecast storms

I’d be willing to bet your home has some sort of smart or internet-connected device. Whether it’s a Nest Thermostat or WeMo smart plugs, the internet is invading our home one small piece of plastic at a time. The struggle with many of these devices, such as the Nest, is that it only provides a data point for one location in your home. While it is possible to add additional thermostats, that’s not a cost-effective solution for most consumers.

That’s where Koto comes in. Its recently launched Indiegogo campaign offers three different sensors that each collect and report on important measurable data in your home, like air quality or dust count. By doing so, Koto is able to paint a more reliable picture of your home’s health and can even recommend on how to improve it…

New Halo 5: Guardians trailer drops as retailers ramp-up pre-order deals

halo-5-guardians

It’s October and that means that it is Halo 5 month. The much anticipated title is set to launch on the 27th and we couldn’t be more excited. It has been a largely quiet few months since we saw our first glimpse of Halo 5 back at E3 and Microsoft detailed a new limited edition console.

Today was our first glimpse of the storyline that strays Master Chief from his moral compass. Now four soldiers must travel across the galaxy to return our hero to his rightful place. No matter, the trailer looks gorgeous and we’re just 15 days away from its release.

Prime members can currently save $10 off the regular listing, knocking the price down to $49.99 by pre-ordering through Amazon, which includes an exclusive Projection SMG with Long Barrel weapon and Saturnine VisorGamers Club Unlocked members can grab Halo 5: Guardians for $48 at Best Buy. Of course, the Limited Edition and Collector’s Edition each offer unique add-ons to the game itself.

As always, you can find the best console gaming deals each morning in our daily roundups.

The new Light digital camera uses 16 lenses (!!!) to craft the perfect picture

Is more better? According to the inventors behind the new 16 lens Light digital camera, it is. This new startup out of Silicon Valley hopes to bring DSLR-quality images to a smartphone-form factor. Something that has been talked about for years but has struggled to be fully realized.

So how do you cram 52 megapixels worth of imagery into a palm-sized camera? Light plans on leveraging the power of all 16 lenses to capture ultra-high resolution images. The science behind it is really intriguing.

This clothes-folding washing machine brings first-world laziness to defcon zero

Say what you want, doing laundry isn’t easy. Nor is often fun. We’ve come so far, I don’t even have to get off the couch to unlock my front door anymore. Laundry machines haven’t seen as much advancement. There are some pretty cool washer and dryer options these days, but there is still some labor involved in the process.

Thankfully, Panasonic has partnered with Seven Dreamers in Japan to develop a unique laundry solution, called Laundroid, that takes most of the work out of cleaning your clothes. The good news: it folds your clothes by itself. The bad? It takes up to seven hours to complete a load…

Ever wonder what a $130K VIZIO Ultra HDTV looks like? Now we know.

vizio-reference-series

Today, VIZIO announced pricing on its new Reference Series High Dynamic Range Televisions. This line-up includes Dolby Vision playback technology and a localized dimming LED backlight system with 384 zones which delivers precise control of colors throughout the entire display.

The Reference Series has built-in 5.1 audio with a low-end that hits 20Hz and it can pump out 102dB of sound. It ships with satellite speakers and a wireless subwoofer. Additionally, it has 802.11ac dual-band Wi-Fi, future-ready HDMI inputs and smart functionality.vizio-reference-series-hdtv copy

It’s basically 4K video on steroids, particularly the brightness and clarity. There is only a handful of titles that are currently available in this format and VIZIO is including access to VUDU’s Warner Brothers collection with each purchase.

But we doubt that collection of movies is going to offset the sticker price of these new models. The 65-inch model will carry a $5,999 price tag, while the gargantuan 120-inch VIZIO will go for an astounding $129,999. Both models are available as “special orders” today.

I think we’ll be sticking to VIZIO’s popular M-Series line of 4K Ultra HDTVs.

VIZIO Announces Pricing and Availability for Highly Anticipated Reference Series Collection Featuring Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range Support

IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — VIZIO, Inc., and Dolby Laboratories, Inc., (NYSE: DLB) today announced pricing and availability of the all-new VIZIO Reference Series, the industry’s first-ever complete High Dynamic Range solution with Dolby Vision™ playback technology. Offered at an MSRP of $5,999.99 for the 65″ class model (RS65-B2) and $129,999.99 for the 120″ class model (RS120-B3), the premium collection is packed with groundbreaking innovations designed to make cinephiles rejoice. Equipped with Ultra Color Spectrum™ for a wider color gamut, and a quantum dot panel in the 65″ class model, the high-end Reference Series features an 800-nit, Full-Array LED backlight and 384 Active LED Zones® for a stunningly vivid Ultra HD picture. Customers will receive immediate access to certain Warner Bros. Home Entertainment 4K Ultra HD Dolby Vision mastered titles via the popular video on-demand streaming service, VUDU®. Additional Dolby Vision titles from other content providers will soon be available through Netflix®. Interested consumers can submit their orders now at VIZIO.com and will then be contacted by a local custom installer to arrange delivery and a white-glove setup service.

Designed for cinephiles and high-end home theater enthusiasts, the premium Reference Series collection pushes the boundaries of brightness, color and contrast. Unlike most TVs, which can only reproduce Rec. 709 – the long-time color space standard – Reference Series features Ultra Color Spectrum technology for a wider color gamut, with a quantum dot panel in the 65″ class model rendering colors closer to the range a human eye can see. The incredible picture is enhanced further by a Full-Array 800-nit LED backlight with an unprecedented 384 Active LED Zones, enabling a wider range of luminance and precise contrast control.

“VIZIO and Dolby have worked tirelessly together to make true High Dynamic Range a reality for consumers. The picture quality achieved with Dolby Vision on the VIZIO Reference Series is literally jaw-dropping and establishes a new level of excellence for the industry,” said Matt McRae, Chief Technology Officer, VIZIO. “High Dynamic Range and Ultra Color Spectrum is enabled through proprietary, custom panel technologies creating a television that pushes the limits of contrast ratios and color gamut while redefining the level of picture quality available at home. VIZIO worked closely with partners like Dolby, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, VUDU and Netflix to ensure content was re-mastered to take advantage of the Reference Series’ capabilities and ready to stream through VIZIO Internet Apps Plus®.”

Dolby Vision playback technology on the Reference Series enables a dramatically enhanced viewing experience, with increased brightness capacity and color accuracy. With enhanced reproduction of luminance, Dolby Vision creates a new level of high contrast range with true-to-life intensity, more accurately reproducing the nuances in every picture to reveal fine details.

“Dolby advances the science of sight and sound to enable spectacular experiences,” said Kevin Yeaman, President and CEO, Dolby Laboratories. “With VIZIO’s launch of the first TV with Dolby Vision technology, and the commitment of major studios to deliver Dolby Vision content, we are now able to bring a dramatically enhanced visual experience to consumers in the home.”

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has expanded its slate of movies available in Dolby Vision via VUDU on the VIZIO Reference Series. In addition to previously announced content, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment continues its steady pipeline of remastered 4K Ultra HD titles with Dolby Vision to include San Andreas, Mad Max: Fury Road, Magic Mike XXL, Jupiter Ascending, Man of Steel, The Great Gatsby and more.

“Seeing our great titles remastered in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision is very exciting,” said Jim Wuthrich, President, Americas, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. “With the increased availability and popularity of 4K Ultra HD TV with High Dynamic Range, audiences can experience these extraordinary films in a new, engaging way that is remarkably bright, colorful and true-to-life.”

Consumers can enjoy Dolby Vision content right away on the VIZIO Reference Series through streaming partner VUDU. An ongoing list of upcoming titles available for streaming in Dolby Vision can be found at VUDU.com/UHD.

“Our priority is to deliver a premium digital home entertainment experience,” said Scott Blanksteen, Vice President of Product, VUDU. “We led innovation in streaming HD content for the home, and now, with VIZIO and Dolby Vision, we will once again take a giant leap forward. We are confident that customers will value the stunningly realistic visuals Dolby Vision brings to the Reference Series, and we will ensure they will be able to easily access and enjoy this content on VUDU.”

Netflix has also committed to remastering content in Dolby Vision and is expected to deliver season one of its popular adventure dramaMarco Polo as its first Dolby Vision release via the Netflix app soon. Netflix will also offer season two of Marco Polo in Dolby Vision upon premiere.

“Set in the court of Kublai Khan, Marco Polo is one of the most visually stunning shows on Netflix,” said Kevin McEntee, Vice President of Digital Supply Chain, Netflix. “We are excited to add Dolby Vision to the palette of options used by the creative community making content for Netflix.”

Additional Reference Series Collection Features Include:

  • Blazing fast 802.11ac dual-band WiFi for a fast, efficient streaming experience.
  • VIZIO Internet Apps Plus® for access to High Dynamic Range playback through VUDU and Ultra HD content through apps including Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, UltraFlix, and Toon Goggles.1

LEGO Ideas has delivered some of the coolest projects that we have seen. The crowd-sourced program is responsible for building kits like this replication of the Big Bang Theory living room or the incredibly detailed WALL-E set. After being teased a while back by LEGO, it has now been officially announced that a new Doctor Who-inspired set will be released in December.

Robo Wunderkind uses iOS connectivity and LEGO-like blocks to teach children about coding

Kickstarter has delivered some pretty cool projects over the last couple of years. One of our favorites to come out of the crowd-funding world is the Kano Raspberry Pi microcomputer. As coding has taken off with the success of iOS and Android’s app stores, we are seeing more educators and parents take an interest in using it as a medium for learning. Kano was one of the first coding projects for kids on Kickstarter and we loved it.

Fast forward a year later and another Kickstarter campaign is focused on marrying robotics and coding into a kid-friendly package. Robo Wunderkind uses LEGO skills and iOS/Android connectivity to enable children to build their own robot. So far the response has been through the roof.

Review: Rock Band 4 makes an old favorite come alive with refreshed gameplay, new songs & updated hardware

It has been five long years since we’ve had a new Rock Band release from Harmonix. We were thrilled when it was announced back in the winter that the fourth generation of the popular franchise would be making its way to Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Along with that announcement came word of updated accessories, including a Band-in-a-Box bundle from Mad Catz with a Fender Stratocaster-inspired guitar.

So after five years, what does Rock Band 4 have in store for its loyal following? Aside from updated hardware, a new feature allows gamers to add their own “personal signature” on each song with freestyle guitar solos and drum fills. The game is set to ship tomorrow and we’re ready to tell you about our experience rocking out at home.

These Bluetooth earbuds use your iPhone’s Lightning port to charge

Wireless headphones have become more of the expectation than the exception lately. With advancements in Bluetooth capabilities and Apple Watch support for storing music, cutting the headphone cord is easier than ever. While wireless often means greater freedom, one of the challenges is managing battery life. Even the top brands in this category struggle to get more than eight hours of listening time.

One of the more intriguing solutions to this problem is leveraging the power of your device to charge your headphones. There has been some movement with this idea from JBL and others but it’s a largely untested idea. A new Kickstarter campaign has set out to bring a new pair of earbuds to market that use both Lightning and microUSB ports to recharge on-the-go. Judging by the amount of money pledged, there is some serious interest from consumers as well.

Exploride combines the best iPhone features into one safe head-up display unit for your car

For better or worse, we’re using our phones more and more each day. While technology has made our lives easier, it is also a potentially dangerous tool. The hazard of driving and using a smartphone is well known. While there are car mounts that elevate your device to eye-level, some users desire a more refined experience. CarPlay has made its push into the automotive industry but the reception has been somewhat mixed.

This is where Exploride comes in. A transparent head-up display (HUD) unit that shows all of your pertinent information, including vehicle diagnostics, smartphone notification, GPS directions and more. Since its launch on Indiegogo, Exploride has blown past its initial goal and is enjoying massive support from online backers.

Kwikset drops the extras on its new internet-connected deadbolt lock to hit a lower price point

Smart connected devices for our homes are becoming more commonplace, with technology giants like Apple and Samsung leading the way with support for a myriad of devices. Even Amazon has an internet-connected speaker that will control your lights, thermostat and more.

One of the biggest issues with this technology is price. Many consumers are not willing to pay the premium that comes with support for Apple’s HomeKit or other platforms like Z-Wave or Zigbee. Simply put, the deadbolt has worked in its existing state for decades, why upgrade it now?

Kwikset has been leading the charge on smartphone connected locks with its Kevo Bluetooth-enabled product. But for roughly $200, the adoption rate has been slow. Today, the lock maker has released a new deadbolt that drops a number of features but retains its internet connectivity in exchange for a lower price point.

Skreens combines your DVR, Xbox One, Roku and more onto one screen

If you’re anything like myself, it’s not uncommon to have the TV on, iPad propped up and iPhone on hand. The other night was a great example: I was playing Forza 6 on my Xbox One, with Monday Football on my iPad and Twitter going on the iPhone. Thankfully iOS 9 has brought multitasking and picture-in-picture to our favorite tablet, but still having multiple devices going at once can be a struggle.

There is a new Kickstarter campaign that launched yesterday with an eye on simplifying this first world problem. Skreens is a set-top box with up to four inputs that collects all your favorite sources and puts them on one screen. For example, your gaming console, Roku box and DVR can all be shown on one screen.

After just 20 hours, this project has already raised well over three times its original goal. Read on for more details.

Samsung goes old school on its new Serif TV set with help from fonts

samsung-serif-tv-different-sizes

Samsung is looking back in its eternal quest to find the next big thing. Its latest “innovation” takes a hard look at the television and how it has evolved over the last 60 years. Instead of slimming down or curving the display, Samsung’s latest release leans heavy on the days when televisions were a piece of furniture and didn’t hang on the wall.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=34&v=0QYF5TF_sdQ

The new Serif TV is inspired by font stylings and designs of days gone by. From the side, it’s best described as a television wrapped with a frame which looks like a capital I. Samsung partnered with French design firm Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec to re-imagine how HDTVs interact within the home. The frame isn’t the only piece of the puzzle that has changed, the back is covered in a woven fabric and a four legged attachment is included for a free-standing experience.

Don’t expect all this design to come cheap. Samsung is set to release the Serif TV in November, with European countries getting the initial wave of availability. It will initially be released in 24, 30 and 40-inch sizes with prices going up to $1,860.
