SLICK’s motorized mount takes the bumps out of your GoPro videos

GoPro’s action cameras are awesome. From surfing to skiing, skateboarding or mountain biking and hundreds of other activities in between, it’s now easier than ever to capture beautiful high resolution footage. However, the footage can get a little rocky from time to time as GoPro mounts do not have any give and simply move as the user does.

That’s where SLICK comes in. Instead of depending on traditional stationary mounts, this Kickstarter project uses a three axis accelerometer and gyroscopes to detect movement and adjusts the camera automatically. The difference between smooth gliding footage and traditional video is stunning.

Quick Review: The Conway Electric Extō Dual-USB is the envy of all power strips

So here’s the story: we recently featured a pretty sweet lighting company out of the northwest called A-Lamp Design. As I was putting together the article, I became entranced by the red power cords that Erol Chandler was using for his products. He tells me that a company called Conway Electric, also on the west coast, is cranking out these power supplies that put your average cord to shame.

Turns out, Conway Electric is doing all that and more. As one of the only UL Listed companies in North America (a very costly certification), Kevin Faul and his crew are making the type of power supply everyone wishes that they had under their desk. So he sends over Conway’s 12-foot Extō Dual-USB power source in mint with a red cord and I fell in love.

The new AfterShokz headphones bring bone conduction audio to Apple Watch

As an avid bike rider, I love to have a pair of Bluetooth in-ear headphones with me while I ride. Now that many wireless headphones (BT 4.0+) can connect to Apple Watch during workouts, it’s even handier than ever. One of the biggest worries about using in-ear headphones is that it’s difficult to hear noise around you when the music is cranked up. During outdoor physical activities, like biking down a country road for example, it can be difficult to hear oncoming traffic that may pose a risk to your safety.

That’s where AfterShokz: Trekz come in. This new Indiegogo campaign has developed a set of bone conducting in-ear headphones that keep your ear canals open but the music pumping. This project caught our eye, having already raised over 200% of its funding goal in just 24 hours.

Fotokite Phi makes flying a drone as easy as walking your dog

Drones are all the rage right now and we’ve covered our fair share here at 9to5Toys. The good news for consumers is that prices are slowly falling and top manufacturers are recognizing the need to introduce amateur friendly models. The new Fotokite Phi, “a camera on a leash”, might just be the easiest drone to fly that we have ever seen.

With GoPro compatibility and gesture controls, this model stands out as a unique option for beginner pilots. It has only been a few hours since the project launched on Indiegogo, but the response has been very positive.

Gigantic Lite-Brite brings all your childhood art work back to life

The Lite-Brite is one of the iconic toys from the last 50 years. The ability to create custom lighted displays of nearly any idea possible was always a fun time. Now, hero design out of San Francisco has managed to create a model, called the Everbright, that is over 42 times bigger than the original toy. Instead of plugging each individual light in, they are using 464 dials that adjust the millions of colors and hues of each individual LED light. The creations are pretty awesome…

With a giant Lite-Brite, the opportunities are endless. We’re thinking that one would look pretty cool in the 9to5Toys office.

Review: The Turtle Beach 800X Elite headset brings Xbox One games to life but lacks in one key area

At one point, gaming headsets with microphones were reserved for the hardcore gaming enthusiasts that spent hours online at a time and craved the boost of a locked-in environment. Over the last few years, companies like Turtle Beach, SteelSeries and Razer have flooded the market with headset options at all price points. However, Xbox One users have settled in with one company in particular as the go-to for supplying top-notch audio for their gaming experience.

The Turtle Beach Elite 800X hit the shelves of retailers a few months ago, labeled as “the most advanced gaming headset ever”. That’s a lofty description, but with wireless connectivity, DTS 7.1 surround sound, custom audio profiles and luxury materials, we knew we had to see if this headset lived up to the hype.

Stop paying rental fees w/ the best-selling Motorola Arris SB6121 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable modem (refurb): $45 (Orig. $100)

motorola-sb6121-cable-modem

Walmart offers the refurbished Motorola ARRIS SB6121 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem for $44.78 shipped. That’s just over $55 off the original MSRP, $25 better than Amazon’s current new condition listing, a touch lower than our previous mention and the best current price we can find.

This is the best-selling cable modem over at Amazon where it is rated 4.5/5 stars by nearly 9,000 customers. It features DOCSIS 3.0 capabilities to ensure some of the fastest speeds available to consumers and can hit up to 172Mbps down and 131Mbps up. It is compatible with Comcast, Cox, Charter, Time Warner, Mediacom and Brighthouse services, although we recommend confirming with your service provider first.

Motorola’s SB6121 is my cable modem of choice: I’ve owned this model for about a year and have found it to be a reliable product. Aside from saving money on the actual modem purchase itself, this deal also brings monthly savings in the form of avoiding rental fees from your ISP. I save $11 a month by owning my own modem instead of using one from my provider. This modem will pay for itself in less than six months in most cases.

A 90-day warranty is included.

The new Graava action camera uses your heartbeat to capture the best moments and make a highlight reel

Outside of adding more megapixels and upping resolution, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to improve on action cameras. GoPro has been out front of the pack for awhile with 4K video and ultra-compact options that fill the needs for most consumers. So when it comes to innovation, the best target for new entries into the marketplace is software. iOS connectivity is a must and most consumers just want to record their moments and have it instantly edited with automatic backup for later.

Enter Graava. Instead of leaning hard on technical specifications, it wants to simplify the video recording process down to the touch of a button. Its programers have modeled it after the human brain, focusing on sensory changes like sound or vision and even heart rate to capture the most important moments.

Epson’s new EcoTank printers have enough ink for “two years” right out of the box

The new EcoTank line of printers plans on flipping the whole industry on its head by providing a new way of filling up those ink tanks. “One battle you’ll be fighting within interior levels on Endor or Sullust. In the next battle, you might find yourselves among Tatooine’s dusty canyons, or inside the undeniably cool Ice Caves on Hoth. My favorite is the verticality of Tatooine, fighting by the Sandcrawler.”

Olio announces new Gold and Rose Gold options for its luxury smartwatch

olio-smart-watch-collection

Olio first announced its new luxury timepieces for iOS and Android back in March, today they’ve returned with new models made from custom materials. Its latest watches are available in 24 karat gold or 18 karat rose gold. The company has paid extra attention to the details this time around, creating custom batches of the material for these limited edition devices.

The rose gold is particularly notable, when I spoke with founder Steve Jacobs last week it was easy to see the passion behind this medium:

“It’s not just a new color, we’ve developed a new alloy that was custom designed for us”, he said. “The rose gold is a little bit darker, more of a chocolate hue that really looks nice. We’re like a craft brewery or artisanal coffee shop in that we make small batches of high quality products.”

Olio quickly sold out of the first batch of its watches and isolio-watch-collection now ready to release a second run. This round will include 500 steel and black options, as well as 100 of each of the gold models. The new rose and yellow gold watches will retail for $1,195 with a leather band or $1,395 with a solid gold wrist-strap. These prices are a fraction of the cost that Apple charges for the Apple Watch Edition, with similar band options.

9to5Toys will be giving away a Olio Black Watch, valued at $745 in the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned for additional details on how you could win one for yourself.
