How-to play Nintendo Switch on an iMac’s display [Video]

Although I have a TV, my 5K iMac’s display is the one that I use the most throughout the day. With this in mind, I’ve long wished for the ability to play game consoles directly on the 5K display.

An HDMI input option isn’t something you’ll find on any Mac, which obviously limits the the machine’s abilities in this area. Yet, there is one option — Elgato’s GameCapture HD60 S — for those of you wishing to showcase a game console, like the Nintendo Switch, on the iMac’s display.

Normally thought of for its capturing abilities, the HD60 S, which features superior low-latency properties, does a great job of displaying the Nintendo Switch in full screen 1080p at 60 fps. It’s not perfect, and it’s definitely not cheap, but it’s one of the best solutions that I’ve found for using the iMac as an external display. Have a look at our hands-on video walkthrough for more details on my setup.

The good news is you can add back a magnetic charging connector by using Griffin’s BreakSafe cable adapter for USB-C, currently on sale (review). Today the product goes to its lowest price yet, with a 50% discount on the usual retail price bringing it down to just $20 shipped.

Apple’s Thunderbolt Display is dead: These are the best 4K & 5K displays for Mac

If you’ve been holding out for a new standalone desktop display from Apple, you’re either going to take news of the Thunderbolt Display being discontinued as a sign of good things to come, or as a cue to finally purchase a new 4K or 5K display from someone else. For most, especially considering Apple itself is recommending you purchase a third-party display, the latter option is going to be the more likely.

While Apple didn’t recommend any specific third-party alternatives during its discontinuation announcement of the Thunderbolt display last week, we’ve done the work for you and put together our top picks for the best 4K & 5K displays for Mac available to buy right now.

Anker mega-review: PowerCore+, PowerDrive+, and PowerPort+ USB Quick Charge 2.0 & 3.0 gear is some of the best money can buy

Anker is one of a few big names in USB accessories, and there’s a reason for that. This week I had the chance to use several of the company’s PowerCore+ power banks (there are a lot of different offerings spanning many capacities), as well as a PowerPort+ wall charger, and a few different PowerDrive+ car chargers. There are many brands of chargers and power banks out there, and while the experience you get may be similar across the board (yes, there are many chargers and power banks out there just as good as these), Anker goes above and beyond to bring you a package that’s just very high-quality…

Several refurbished 12-inch MacBook w/ Retina display models are now available from Apple

You now have another option for saving a few bucks on a new MacBook. Apple just began selling its 12-inch ultra-thin laptop in refurbished condition. Prices currently range from $1,099 to $1,489 with free shipping. The entry-level model typically sells for $1,299 in new condition. It features a 2304 x 1440 resolution at 226 pixels per inch, a Force Touch trackpad and redesigned ‘butterfly’ keyboard. Apple refurbished items include a full one-year warranty, are eligible for AppleCare, and from what I’ve seen, generally come in great shape with little to no signs of use.

  • Refurbished 12-inch MacBook 1.1GHz Dual-core Intel Core M 256GB: $1,099
  • Refurbished 12-inch MacBook 1.3GHz Dual-core Intel Core M 256GB: $1,319

These prices are decent if you can’t wait for a deal to come around, but with some patience you should be able to get a new unit near or below Apple’s refurbished prices. For example, the high-end 512GB model is currently on sale for just $1,289.99 (Reg. $1,599) and we’ve seen the 256GB model drop as low as $950 (Reg. $1,299).
