Kodak’s 360 degree action camera adds must-see YouTube capabilities

kodak-360-degrees-action-camera

Today Kodak announced that its PIXPRO SP360 action camera was adding support for YouTube’s new 360 degree video capture and playback. This new feature allows viewers to see a complete representation of the area around the camera.

The videos are so unique in that they allow users to explore the video in all angles during playback. Instead of a still image that can be moved around, playback continues while the video is rotated. Kodak has captured some really cool videos out in the wilderness and rollercoasters that bring this technology to life.

Plantronics new BackBeat Sense Bluetooth headphones are loaded with sensors

plantronics-on-ear-headphones

We’ve all been there, someone trying to get our attention while we are jamming out to our favorite tracks or intently listening to an audiobook. After removing our headphones and engaging in a conversation that we probably didn’t want to have, we return to find that our favorite song was over or we’ve missed a chunk of our book. At that point we have to scrub back through the tracks to find the exact spot where we left off.

The new BackBeat SENSE uses built-in Smart Sensors to help solve this problem with a pretty handy feature….

Converse upgrades its Chuck Taylor All Stars with new technology for the first time in nearly a century

chuck-taylor-ii-allstar

It has been a minute since Converse updated its iconic Chuck Taylor All-Star shoes, well, actually 98 years. The popular footwear have been found beneath some of the most important pop-culture figures over the last century, from famous basketball players like Dr. J to former President John F. Kennedy. For nearly 100 years, the design has served itself well since Indiana’s Chuck Taylor first improved the shoe as a Converse salesman.

But times change and your company gets bought by Nike. With the visuals largely going unchanged, Converse is finally bringing some of the technology pioneered by its Beaverton, Oregon parents to the iconic Chuck Taylor All-Stars.

Dad makes a custom Mario Kart 8-inspired nursery and becomes instant internet sensation

mario-kart-8-nursery

Courtesy: Wes Swain

After a nearly decade long hiatus, I recently made a return to Nintendo’s ecosystem. The time away really made me appreciate the beautiful colors, the fun characters and the legacy of games. So when we came across this Dad that made a complete Mario Kart 8 inspired nursery for his newborn, we knew it had to be shared.

Seriously though – how killer is this thing? From the murals to the hand-built replica cart, oh and the Lakitu above the bed, this guy nailed it. The attention to detail all around is really top-notch, we seriously need to give a tip of the cap to this guy.

Now I have to talk to my wife about a nursery.

The Panono panoramic camera is filled with 36 lenses that total 108MP and is available for purchase today

panono-camera-9to5toys

Crowdfunding stories don’t always end on a positive note, sometimes they suffer from delayed shipping dates and sometimes the whole project falls through. After a wildly successful campaign on Indiegogo last year, the Panono Panoramic Ball Camera is ready to ship with a special limited edition model available for all to purchase. There will be 1,000 of these “Explorer Edition” cameras that bring an extra rugged design to the 108MP (combined) camera.

The design is pretty cool – simply throw the ball and its 36 cameras will capture photos in all directions. There is some interesting science behind it that allows the ball to take an ideal shot when it has reached its apex in the air. This allows for the “perfect” picture to be captured as the ball stops spinning. Panono’s 16GB on-board memory can hold roughly 600 panoramas at a time.

So what is it going to cost you? On-top of having to be one of the 1,000 customers quick enough to grab one, it will carry a $1,499 price tag. That is expected to drop to somewhere around $599 when production increases. The Panono Explorer Edition is available today for pre-order with an expected shipment date of September.

Panono Announces the Panono Explorer Edition

BERLIN–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Berlin-based technology company Panono has announced its plan to release the first edition of its highly anticipated Panono Camera, the first consumer camera to exceed 100 megapixels and instantly deliver high-resolution, 360° X 360° full-spherical panoramic images. The Panono Explorer Edition will be delivered to initial crowdfunding backers with shipping starting in September. Additionally, 1,000 cameras will be offered for purchase.

“With the Panono Camera, we found an innovative way to show people our worldwide activities”

“After four years of development and receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from initial test users, we‘re eager to get the Panono Camera into the hands of our generous early-adopter tech and photography enthusiasts who‘ve supported us from the beginning,“ said Jonas Pfeil, founder and CEO of Panono. “We‘re confident that once they experience the level of quality, detail and creative possibilities in our panoramic images and see how easy and fun it is to capture and share them with a Panono, there‘ll be no turning back: People are going to want to add Panono 360° X 360° panoramic images to every one of their photo-worthy experiences.”

Early versions of the Panono Explorer have been in trial use for months by the marketing teams at several consumer companies including BMW and Lufthansa, and at organizations such as the German section of the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF Germany). The Global BMW Communication Management Products and Brands department used the Panono Camera for the company‘s show at the Auto China 2014 in Beijing. For the WWF Germany Panono brings their project documentation to a new level. “With the Panono Camera, we found an innovative way to show people our worldwide activities,” said Sönke Kranz, Director Internet of WWF Germany. “The camera can give authentic insights to places you would normally never get to see.”

THE PANONO EXPLORER EDITION AND PANONO APP

The 108-megapixel Panono Camera is a small, grapefruit-sized, ball-shaped camera with 36 individual camera modules embedded all around it that fire simultaneously to capture everything in every direction. The camera can easily be operated with a selfie-stick. It can also be triggered to shoot by using a mobile device as a remote control when the camera is mounted on a tripod. Uniquely, the 36 camera modules will trigger automatically when the camera is tossed into the air and reaches its apex where it is still for a moment before descending.

Panono’s high-resolution panoramic images can be previewed instantly in the free Panono mobile app before being sent to the Panono Cloud for finishing and delivery back to the app, the photographer‘s account on the Panono website, or can be shared on social media sites. Viewing Panono panoramas in the Panono App is a fully immersive experience in which the viewer seemingly moves inside the image by tilting their mobile device up and down, left and right, and all around, and pinching or spreading the image to view it from other perspectives.

People can also explore Panono panoramas in a web browser using the cursor to move around in all directions inside the image, as demonstrated in a Panono panorama taken recently of Panono executives with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Queen of England on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the “Queen’s Lecture” at the Technical University of Berlin (see above). The Panono Camera was one of only two technology projects demonstrated at the event.

PANONO EXPLORER EDITION – PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS

  • Diameter: 4.33 inches (11 cm)
  • Weight: 1.06 pounds (~ 480 gr)
  • Camera body: tough clear plastic
  • Cameras: 36 fixed-focus cameras
  • Connection: WiFi, USB cable
  • Total resolution: 108 megapixels
  • Mobile App: for iOS7+ and Android4.2+
  • Storage Capacity: 16 GB (~600 panoramas)

PRICING AND AVAILABILITY

The Panono Explorer Edition will start shipping in September. It is available for 1,499 USD at www.panono.com/shop. When the Panono Camera goes into increased production, the retail price is expected to be 599 USD. The Panono consumer version will have all of the features and capabilities present in the exclusive Explorer Edition, but with an advanced fall protection capability that will protect the camera in the event it is dropped on a hard surface when being operated by tossing it into the air.

PANONO HISTORY

The development of the Panono Camera began as part of Panono founder and CEO Jonas Pfeil’s master’s thesis in computer engineering at Technical University of Berlin. In 2011, to much acclaim, he presented a prototype of his throwable panoramic ball camera at the prestigious SIGGRAPH ASIA technical conference, and in 2012, co-founded Panono with fellow TU Berlin graduates Björn Bollensdorff and Qian Qin to refine the camera and bring it to market. In 2014, the company completed a highly successful crowdfunding campaign, launching the new design, announcing the camera’s name, and raising $1.2 million. Later that year, Panono conducted a crowdinvesting campaign on Companisto, where it raised another €1.6 million.

Equipped with 36 individual cameras, the ball-shaped Panono captures high-resolution panoramas with full 360° fields of view in both horizontal and vertical directions. An international patent for the Panono Camera is pending. The Panono Camera Explorer Edition will start shipping in September 2015. Panono GmbH was founded in 2012 by Jonas Pfeil, Björn Bollensdorff and Qian Qin and is based in Berlin, Germany.

Review: The Bang & Olufsen Beolit 15 is a big-ticket Bluetooth speaker with a lavish design

beolit-15-bluetooth-speaker

We see a lot of Bluetooth speakers come through for review that typically fall in the $50-$300 range, rarely topping a price mark higher than that. The question is: do higher priced models deliver a superior sound experience to justify spending two or three times as much other options?

Bang & Olufsen is known for its great sounding audio equipment that have beautiful designs but aren’t necessarily the most cost-effective for the average consumer. B&O released the Beolit 15 back in the winter as a new addition to its family of more affordable B&O PLAY audio products. After spending a few weeks with this Bluetooth speaker, it’s time to answer the question of affordability vs. quality.

Apple has long had MagSafe technology as a part of its laptop power supplies, although it may be on its way out, but it has yet to find its way to iPhone or iPad. The same is true of Android devices, we’ve come so far and yet our phones are easily turned into sling shots with an accidental trip of the cord.

Enter ZNAPS. A new Kickstarter project that is bringing the same concept of MagSafe to any Lightning or microUSB charging cable. Based on the response from the Kickstarter community thus far, there are a lot of users that desire this type of connectivity.

SONOS announces new limited edition solid color PLAY:1 speakers

These newly designed models will have the same high-quality audio as the regular PLAY:1’s but the outside has a soft touch finish that rids itself of the silver grille, opting for a color matching scheme instead. These aren’t going to necessarily standout in any way but that seems to be the point, it’s a better design for those that may be looking for a less “electronic” visual.

Garmin’s Varia radar and lights system alert bicyclists of approaching traffic

garmin-radar-system

Bicycling is a great activity for getting into shape but it does require a constant awareness of what is going on around you. The downfall is that there typically is not paths or wide shoulders on the road, which means bikes and cars are sharing the same space.

Garmin is setting out to enhance the safety of riders with a new radar system that detects approaching vehicles from the rear. The Varia Rearview Bike Radar and Smart Lights system puts riders in a safer position by alerting both riders and approaching traffic that they will be closing in on each other.
