Google partners with Yubico to offer 50% off its two-factor authentication USB thumb drive: $9 (Reg. $18)

fido-u2f-usb

Google has announced that it is partnering with Yubico, makers of USB and wireless security technologies, to offer 50% off its U2F security key for eligible Google for Work customers. These small USB thumb drives provide an alternative to two-step authentication which typically relies on SMS messages or Google’s Authentication app. Yubico’s U2F security key regularly retails for $18. Eligible Google accounts can receive a 50% discount, dropping the final price to $9. Visit this page to check to see if you’re eligible for the discount.

This new security option was first introduced by Google back in the fall of last year. Yubico’s thumb drive uses the Universal 2nd Factor (U2F) protocol to deliver authentication. By plugging the USB drive into your computer, Google Chrome can recognize the device and login to services such as Google Work. Since Yubico and Google use the U2F protocol, additional services can also utilize this service for two-factor authentication as well.

PIQ uses multiple sensors and a clever design to paint a clearer picture of your golf game

Golf sensors are by no means a new addition to the world of sporting goods. We’ve seen other models that offer smartphone connected tracking in a variety of ways. Today, a new option is entering the fray that attempts to paint a clear picture of your game.

The PIQ golf sensor blends Bluetooth, GPS, motion sensors and NFC together with the idea of providing more data than has been offered before. It’s an improved design in comparison to the competition with 18 tags that use NFC to identify individual clubs when you take them out of the bag. But it’s all of the data that it collects that really makes PIQ a stand out.

Bricasso scans any image and then 3D prints it using LEGO bricks as ink

bricasso-lego-printer

3D Printers have been getting quite a bit of hype in 2015, with all kinds of Kickstarter campaigns and new releases. We even saw a pancake printer. Now, someone has finally made a LEGO printer and scanner. The Bricasso can take note of any image and turn in into a LEGO creation. Although it’s currently limited to 1×1 blocks, there is a lot of potential here.

Bricasso has multiple tubes on the side that act as “ink tanks” for your LEGO. The printer’s arm reaches over and grabs the necessary blocks and places them on the building plate, creating a replica LEGO model on your image.

Even though it is just 2D for the time being, the future for this LEGO printer looks to be pretty awesome. No word on its availability, but we sure would love to try one out.

Silk by Saffron’s smart LED bulbs adjust your lighting based on the sun

silk-by-saffron

There is a whole mess of LED and smart lighting options on the market today from traditional retailers and startup companies. Aside from saving energy and adding smart functionality, the ability to put out a custom color is one of the biggest selling points of these bulbs.

This is where Silk by Saffron comes in: a recent Kickstarter campaign that is setting out to combine the functionality of smart light bulbs with the ability to change the warmth or coolness depending on the time of day. Our bodies work better with certain color lights throughout the day. Cooler lights give us energy in the morning and warmer colors prepare for sleep at night.

But how Silk is doing it combines all that knowledge with smart functionality, creating a really cool solution to this unique problem.

Here’s our first real look at Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 for Xbox One and PS4

Although Amazon’s official listing says the end of the year, Tony Hawk himself tweeted that the game would be released in September.

Lexus just teased a new hoverboard and it looks awesome

lexus-hoverboard-prototype

Update (7/30 10:30am): Lexus has released another teaser video, this time announcing that it will finally take the wraps of its new hoverboard on August 5th.

Lexus is showing off a hoverboard today – yeah, you read that right – and it looks pretty sick. By combining liquid nitrogen-cooled conductors and magnets, it will lift a rider off the ground while standing on a bamboo platform. The nitro does make a pretty cool effect with the slight smoke billowing out. There aren’t many details at this time, but it certainly is worth checking out the teaser video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zTCgMPZRuo

Turns out, Lexus isn’t the only car company working on some cool technology. Ford has detailed a new e-bike that can fold up into your car’s trunk. Called the MoDe:Flex, although we don’t have much information other than that, Ford has released a video showing it cruising around.

https://youtu.be/xap3vEfbuF4

It can sync with the Mode:Link smartphone app to plan routes, tracking progress, etc. Although it’s currently a prototype, this would be a pretty killer way to get around town.

Samsung HDD Announces the Thinnest and Lightest Weight 4TB External Hard Drives in the World

June 17, 2015 08:01 AM Eastern Daylight Time

CUPERTINO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Samsung HDD, a division of Seagate Technology, today announced 4TB M3 Portable and the P3 Portable external hard drives, which are the first 4TB USB-powered single drive solutions to come in 2.5” cases in the world.

“The Spinpoint™ M10P 4TB hard drive enables this innovation with the highest aerial density, 800GB per disk in the world”

“Previously only attainable in desktop or bulky multi-drive internal designs, we can now achieve a 4TB capacity in a compact drive thanks to the latest Samsung HDD technology,” said Dave Klenske, director of product line management, Samsung HDD. “By going to a single drive solution, we can power the drive through just a USB connection while fitting it into a case that is only a 1/10 of an inch thicker than our 2TB drive. They are the perfect lightweight drives for notebook computer owners who need to access media collections too large to fit on traditional internal storage options.”

The 4TB Samsung® M3 Portable and the Samsung® P3 Portable drives measure 0.78 inches thin and weigh only 8.3 ounces and operate at USB 3.0 speeds without requiring any external power supplies.

“The Spinpoint™ M10P 4TB hard drive enables this innovation with the highest aerial density, 800GB per disk in the world,” said Doug DeHaan, general manager, Samsung HDD division. “With consumer demand for external storage capacity continuing to grow, the P3 and M3 4TB answer the increasing appetite for storage and are positioned to lead future capacity needs from the mobile market.”

Microsoft officially announces new $349 Xbox One pricing, 1TB model and updated controllers

Update (6/9 6:00pm): Microsoft is offering a $50 promotional code to its store with the pre-order of the 1TB Xbox One + Halo: The Master Chief Collection Bundle.

After hearing rumblings last week, Microsoft has announced that it will officially be dropping the price on its 500GB Xbox One model to $349. We frequently see deals in our daily games/apps roundup that are even lower than this updated list price. A new 1TB console that includes the Halo: Master Chief Collection was also detailed by Microsoft this morning, which will start at $399 and is available for pre-order now.

Today’s new consoles will ship with Microsoft’s updated Wireless Controller which now includes a 3.5mm stereo headset jack, eliminating the need for extra add-ons or third-party solutions. The special edition Covert Forces controller that we previously detailed is also available for pre-order today as a part of this news.
