Apple is now selling various refurbished iPad Air 2 models on its online store

Nearly 7 months after its original release date, iPad Air 2 has finally made its way to Apple’s online Refurbished Store. Prices start at $419 (Reg. $499) for a 16GB Wi-Fi model and go all the way up to $689 (Reg. $829) for a fully-loaded 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular model. As of right now there are a lot of different models available in each color (Gold, Silver, Space Gray), but that can change quickly as Apple’s refurbished inventory is extremely limited.

These are decent prices if you need an iPad Air 2 right now, but we regularly track better prices for brand new units:

The RMRD 2.0 Small Wind Turbine leverages the power of wind to charge your iPhone and other devices

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rmrdtech/a-small-wind-turbine-for-a-big-difference

Now more than ever, consumers are finding that there is a need for backup power sources away from home. We frequently highlight deals on portable USB power banks that provide an extra boost of energy when your iPhone or iPad is about to die. One unique Kickstarter is setting out to do the same but plans on relying on the power of wind to supply your devices with more battery life.

The RMRD 2.0 Small Wind Turbine is designed by a group of developers that have leaned on the ease of 3D printing with the power of wind to create a portable USB power supply. The design is fairly straight forward: it starts with a simple turbine that is on a stand, it rests above a pole where it can spin freely in the wind. From there, the energy is collected and transferred to your device via USB and a lithium-ion battery, providing five volts of power with 5.5 m/s of wind.

Whether charging a device directly off the turbine or fueling up a battery pack for later, the Small Wind Turbine from RMRD offers a unique way to charge while leveraging the resources around us. If it comes to fruition, this would be an intriguing option for campers or off-the-grid enthusiasts. Those interested can get in during the Kickstarter campaign for $239, which includes the turbine, a lithium-ion battery and carrying case. So far, RMRD has raised just over 15% of its goal with 41 days remaining.

Position your iPad as a secondary monitor or anywhere else w/ Twelve South HoverBar 3: $75 shipped (Reg. $100)

Amazon offers the Twelve South HoverBar 3 for $74.99 with free shipping, which is 25% below its regular price and the best deal we’ve ever seen.

Features include:

  • Heavy duty yet delicate clamp secures to any surface up to 1-inch thick
  • Creates a hands-free kitchen mount or desktop workstation with no install required
  • Includes extra kickstand that creates a handy tabletop display
  • Includes Fit Clips for iPad Air, iPad mini and iPad (2nd – 4th generation)

[vimeo 95278183 w=853 h=480]

Combo it with Duet for iOS and you’ll have a killer dual monitor setup.

Our conclusion after reviewing the Hoverbar 3:

For most people, it’s kind of a luxury item. It’s not that difficult to use an existing or cheaper stand to position the iPad roughly where you want it on a desk or kitchen worktop, and not too great a hardship to hold it while watching movies or reading books in bed.

But I have to say that within a very short time, I came to rely on it. The ability to place the iPad exactly where you want it, and to indulge in the sheer laziness of having it hover above the pillow in bed, is very appealing.

My only minor gripe is that the hex-nut system for applying the clamp means it’s not an instant job to move it from one place to the other. It’s not difficult, but some kind of flip-handle clamp would be great. But if you mostly expect to use it on one place, and just need to push it out of the way the rest of the time, leaving the clamp in place, it’s highly recommended.

Twelve South makes really great accessories for Apple products, but if you’re looking to save even more money then you could go with this similar iPad mount from Taotronics for $35.99.

The SmartBag has a number of unique and interesting design cues, most notably providing a USB port in every pocket. However, the real question is how many times can it recharge your gadgets?

Apple iPad Air 16GB LTE (refurb): $300 shipped (orig. $629)

Update (2/11 3:15pm): OOS But  A4C Has the iPad Air 16GB with LTE for $299.99 shipped, an all time low

Quick Ship Electronics (99.3% rated seller) via eBay Daily Deals offers an open-box Apple iPad Air 32GB Wi-Fi in silver for $289.99 with free shipping. When it was originally released in 2013 it carried a list price of $599, but Apple is currently charging $389 for refurbished units.

The sellers detailed description of the iPad’s condition: “This item shows virtually no signs of use. It includes the original package (which may be lightly distressed) and the original OEM accessories. We include a free 1 year warranty with every item we sell.” Clearly it’s not brand new, but it’s $99 below Apple’s refurb. price, which we think that makes up for it not being factory fresh.

The Speck CandyShell Grip iPad mini Case features a hard shell design with raised rubber grips and button covers plus a dual-layer design. Our own Jeremy Horwitz found it to be a solid option for protecting the iPad mini:

Overall, CandyShell and CandyShell Grip for the iPad mini are equally worthy of our high recommendation and A- rating. While there are some tweaks that would make them even better, they’re amongst the very best playthrough-style cases on the market today, and very difficult to fault on quality or overall design.

Small States: Paper by FiftyThree pursues the new digital American Dream, multiple giveaways

Update (1/24 9:00am): @ericmata75 is our winner, thank you to everyone for entering our giveaway!

The story goes, as told by co-founder Andrew Allen, that Paper by FiftyThree started out of a love for analog products. That four Microsoft colleagues turned friends with the resources of a Fortune 500 company found a greater passion in a pencil, scissors…and paper. Often Andew, Georg Petschnigg, Jonathan Harris and Julian Walker would sit down and discuss their ideas, talking about possibilities that bounced around in their heads. These brainstorming sessions would always be recorded on a scrap, or coffee filter, napkin or Moleskin, notably they weren’t writing in Word or the like – they were writing everything out.

The feeling of analog products, the feel of cutting paper or dragging a pencil across paper. How do they bring that feeling to a digital world? It was at that point, they bunkered down in a 5th floor New York apartment and set out to re-imagine digital design. They set out to make Paper.
