The new Graava action camera uses your heartbeat to capture the best moments and make a highlight reel

Outside of adding more megapixels and upping resolution, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to improve on action cameras. GoPro has been out front of the pack for awhile with 4K video and ultra-compact options that fill the needs for most consumers. So when it comes to innovation, the best target for new entries into the marketplace is software. iOS connectivity is a must and most consumers just want to record their moments and have it instantly edited with automatic backup for later.

Enter Graava. Instead of leaning hard on technical specifications, it wants to simplify the video recording process down to the touch of a button. Its programers have modeled it after the human brain, focusing on sensory changes like sound or vision and even heart rate to capture the most important moments.

Star Wars announces new Team Deathmatch mode for Battlefront, pre-order discounts available

Update (8/3 3:00pm): Star Wars has also released another quick teaser of upcoming gameplay modes, this time highlighting Fighter Squadron.

Star Wars Battlefront is coming this fall and we couldn’t be more excited. Today, EA lifted the veil on a new gameplay mode called Blast. This Team Deathmatch style option pits Rebel vs Imperial in 10 person teams. It’s all out battle until one team reaches 100 kills or whomever has the most at the end of ten minutes. There will be weapons and other tools like turrets and Drone scanners hiding throughout the map to pick up and use during battle.

Game designer Dennis Brännvall promises intense action on custom made levels for Blast. These layouts will differ from traditional maps on multiplayer and co-op. He explains further:

“One battle you’ll be fighting within interior levels on Endor or Sullust. In the next battle, you might find yourselves among Tatooine’s dusty canyons, or inside the undeniably cool Ice Caves on Hoth. My favorite is the verticality of Tatooine, fighting by the Sandcrawler.”

Star Wars Battlefront is set to launch on November 17th. Amazon is currently offering a pre-order discount to Prime members, dropping the final price down to $55, while the Deluxe version can be had for $63Gamers Club Unlocked Members at Best Buy can save 20% on pre-orders knocking the total to $48 plus a $10 gift card.

Stream Pixar’s animated short Lava in its entirety for free

Until today the only way to see Pixar’s Lava short film was to catch it before a showing of Inside Out. But now Disney and Pixar are letting you stream the entire film for free from the Disney Movies Anywhere app.

To watch it you’ll need to sign-in to the app (or create a free account) and then head to the ‘Featured’ tab where you’ll see a big banner for Lava. Just tap the ‘Watch Video’ button and you’ll be off and running. Enjoy the film and good luck getting its song out of your head :D.

Inspired by the isolated beauty of tropical islands and the explosive allure of ocean volcanoes, LAVA is a musical love story that takes place over millions of years.

From Pixar Animation Studios, director James Ford Murphy and producer Andrea Warren, LAVA opens in theaters on June 19, 2015,
in front of Inside Out.

Nintendo is reportedly readying its own monthly merchandise subscription service

Rumors are popping up all over the internet today that Nintendo might be getting into the subscription merchandise game. Companies like Loot Crate have achieved moderate success with the home delivered gamer/geek merch boxes, and it looks like Nintendo may want in on the action:

While nothing has been confirmed, sources say the “N-Box” will include everything from toys and clothes to other items branded with Nintendo’s beloved characters. You can also expect what sounds like a pretty cool themed crate, if this indeed a real thing. Those interested can opt for a single box or three, six and twelve month subscriptions.

There is an interesting connection here though. Zavvi is also expected to begin shipping its own ZBOX with a choice of Xbox, Sony or Nintendo goodies. The company is owned by a group that operates Nintendo’s official online store. While there may be some confusion between Zaavi’s upcoming Nintendo themed box and the official N-Box, there just is sufficient enough data to know for sure.

One thing is clear, Nintendo fans are hardcore, and I expect that if Nintendo does indeed get into the merchandise crate game, they will be flying off the shelves like the rest of its popular swag. Here’s to hoping we can get mail-ordered amiibo delivered to our front door every month in the future.

Olio announces new Gold and Rose Gold options for its luxury smartwatch

Olio first announced its new luxury timepieces for iOS and Android back in March, today they’ve returned with new models made from custom materials. Its latest watches are available in 24 karat gold or 18 karat rose gold. The company has paid extra attention to the details this time around, creating custom batches of the material for these limited edition devices.

The rose gold is particularly notable, when I spoke with founder Steve Jacobs last week it was easy to see the passion behind this medium:

“It’s not just a new color, we’ve developed a new alloy that was custom designed for us”, he said. “The rose gold is a little bit darker, more of a chocolate hue that really looks nice. We’re like a craft brewery or artisanal coffee shop in that we make small batches of high quality products.”

Olio quickly sold out of the first batch of its watches and is now ready to release a second run. This round will include 500 steel and black options, as well as 100 of each of the gold models. The new rose and yellow gold watches will retail for $1,195 with a leather band or $1,395 with a solid gold wrist-strap. These prices are a fraction of the cost that Apple charges for the Apple Watch Edition, with similar band options.

9to5Toys will be giving away a Olio Black Watch, valued at $745 in the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned for additional details on how you could win one for yourself.

Kodak’s 360 degree action camera adds must-see YouTube capabilities

Today Kodak announced that its PIXPRO SP360 action camera was adding support for YouTube’s new 360 degree video capture and playback. This new feature allows viewers to see a complete representation of the area around the camera.

The videos are so unique in that they allow users to explore the video in all angles during playback. Instead of a still image that can be moved around, playback continues while the video is rotated. Kodak has captured some really cool videos out in the wilderness and rollercoasters that bring this technology to life.

Disney’s award-winning Animated iPad app hits a new all-time low price of $3 (Reg. $10)

Great stories are the heart and soul of Disney. They are the very essence of every immersive theme park ride, memorable piece of merchandise, and unforgettable song. Disney’s award-winning Animated iPad app offers a deep dive into the creative process behind these stories through “interactive images, animated clips with frame-by-frame control, Disney 3D characters to animate, and a rich timeline of all 53 Walt Disney Animation Studio features.” In 2013 Apple named Animated the iPad App of the Year.

Disney Animated is usually priced at $9.99, but it dropped down to a historical low of just $2.99 this morning. Heads up this app is massive. Insert Coin documentary gives a behind-the-scenes look at how Midway owned gaming in the 90’s

It has been a few years now since game developer/publisher Midway disbanded, and even longer since it dominated the attention of gamers the way it did in the 90’s. Some may forget how impactful the company was in the early days of gaming with Mortal Kombat, Smash TV, Cruis’n USA, Terminator 2 and NBA Jam all becoming smash hits in the 90’s. And now game developer/filmmaker, Joshua Tsui, has taken to Kickstarter looking to fund a new documentary to make sure we don’t.

Having worked at Midway himself, it looks as though Tsui will be hitting up some of his contacts from the old days (along what looks some pretty hilarious behind-the-scenes footage) to create his new film: Insert Coin: Inside Midway’s ’90s Revolution.

Described as the “the untold history of the greatest videogame studio of the 90’s”, the film looks pretty interesting:

Insert Coin talks to the developers of each game and lays out how all the games were made and how they connected with each other. Every game had its own unique story about victories, setbacks, and general mayhem. Only someone from the inside can understand the context of events and ask the right questions.

One developer says, “NBA Jam made $1 billion in its first 12 months” in the Kickstarter clip:

One more interesting thing about Joshua Tsui, his face was being used as Sub Zero and Liu Kang in the original games. Tsui says “in fact I think if there was an Asian in a Midway 90’s game, good chance it was me.”

A $15 pledge will net you a digital copy of the film, $30 will get your name in the credits and some bonus footage during production, and for $5,000 you can be in the movie: “YOUR BEAUTIFUL FACE in the documentary talking about your memories of Midway Arcade Games of the 90’s.”

The Lemunati CS1 coverts your iPhone 6 into a Super 8 style camcorder for an “upgraded” filming experience

The iPhone 6 is one of the most advanced pieces of technology that consumers across the world have readily had access to. It has many advanced features, highlighted by some very strong technical specifications in the area of video and photography.

We’ve all had the experience of attempting to capture video with an iPhone, a sometimes very frustrating venture. Aside from the dreaded vertical shot, iPhone doesn’t necessarily have the best ergonomics for filming. The Lumenati CS1 is a new Kickstarter-backed case that provides your iPhone with much more than protection. It’s a full on Super 8 camera inspired system that controls the start and stopping of your camera, has an interchangeable lens system and many other features.

GameStop offers $100 credit towards the New Nintendo 3DS w/ 2DS, 3DS, 3DS XL, Vita trade-ins

If you have been waiting for a solid trade-in deal to upgrade your Nintendo (or Sony) handheld console up to the New Nintendo 3DS XL, now might be the time. GameStop is offering $100 in credit towards the purchase of a new Nintendo 3DS XL when trading in a 2DS, 3DS, 3DS XL or a PS Vita. Regularly $200, this would bring your total down to $100 on Nintendo’s latest handheld that features an additional thumbstick, faster processing, amiibo support and exclusive games.

If you’re interested in upgrading, this may be one of the best values you will find outside of selling or trading independently, which comes with its own set of hassles. You’ll find more details on the terms and conditions of the trade-in below, but for the most part it appears as though a system in good condition with a charger will lock down the credit.

You can find your nearest GameStop here.

On top of this morning’s game/app deals, GameStop is offering a Buy 2 Get 1 Free on pre-owned Wii or Nintendo DS games and accessories.

Terms and Conditions New 3DS trade-in:

$100 Credit toward New 3DS XL: Offer valid through 7/27/15. Credit must be applied toward the purchase  of the New 3DS XL. Hardware must have all necessary components for trade. Not valid toward cash trades. Trades must be in full working condition to receive full value. Defective items may be eligible for trade at a lesser value.  Trades subject to manager approval. Cannot be combined with any other offer.  See store associate for details.  No dealers.  Offer valid in the United States, Puerto Rico and Guam only.  Void where prohibited. GameStop, Inc. reserves the right to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the offer for any reason without notice.

Here’s the first trailer for the new Telltale Minecraft Story Mode game

Back in December of last year Telltale announced that it would be working with Mojang on a story-based Minecraft title known as Story Mode. Quite a departure from the usual free-form, creative gameplay Minecraft took the world over with, the title looks to bring Telltale’s narrative touch into the mix. Today we get our first trailer for the 5-part episodic game (seen below), along with a quick glimpse of what to expect in terms of visuals and story.

This is not an online game, there is full dialog courtesy of Patton Oswalt and others, and there’s a definitive story arch and ending. While there is player choice driven content, like with other Telltale adventure games, players will be following along the story of Jesse and his friends as they attempt to save there world with the help of the Legendary Order:

Jesse and his group of friends revere the legendary Order of the Stone; four adventurers who slayed an Ender Dragon. The Order are the very best at what they do: Warrior, Redstone Engineer, Griefer, and Architect. While at EnderCon, Jesse and his friends discover that something is wrong… something dreadful. Terror is unleashed, and they must set out on a journey to find The Order of the Stone if they are to save their world from oblivion.

The game will be available as a digital download “soon” for Mac, PC, all major consoles (other than Nintendo’s), iOS and Android. Some reports suggest “soon” could be as early as the next few weeks.

Be sure to hit up our daily game/app roundups for all the best gaming deals across every platform.
