Camera+ launches its first free version w/ in-app upgrades for advanced shooting features

Makers of the popular Camera+ app, a $3 third-party photography app for iPhone with around 14 million users, today launched its first free version in an attempt to attract even more users to the platform.

Dubbed simply “Camera+ Free,” the app’s creator gave us the rundown on the free experience, noting that it offers the same experience as the paid app minus some of the more advanced features like manual shooting controls and the app’s “The Lab” editing suite. Instead, the free app offers up focus, exposure and macro shooting settings, scene modes including clarity, and 3 free filter packs. Beyond that, users will be able to add-on some of the more advanced features to the free version using in-app purchases, allowing them to essentially unlock the full experience of the paid app.

We want to get the app out to as many people as possible. We currently have 14 million users, but we’d love to see more people using and falling in love with our app. We think by offering people a free version, more people who typically don’t pay for apps will give it a try. If they like it then they may buy some in-apps or just spread the word about our app. – Camera+ cofounder Lisa Bettany

The free version of the Camera+ app is available on the App Store now.

Update (9/9 9:45am): The 64GB deal at Staples has now expired, but Gravity Buys via eBay Daily Deals has the 128GB iPad Air 2 for $589.99 shipped (Reg. $699).

Staples offers the Apple iPad Air 2 in 64GB flavor in Gold/Silver/ Space Gray for $449 with free shipping os site to store. That’s $150 off the retail price and the lowest price we’ve seen on it new from a reputable retailer.  It offers full iOS 9 compatibility including split view and picture in picture (the only current Apple product to do so). Apple’s iPad Air 2 features a 9.7-inch Retina multi-touch display with a 2048×1536 resolution, it also has an A8X chip, M8 motion coprocessor, 8MP iSight camera with 1080p HD recording capabilities and Touch ID.

Apple is not expected to update the iPad 2 at the event next week but it may have a price drop. That said, we feel like at most it will be $100 less this week, meaning this is still $50 less.

Well-known developer 2K is stepping into the iOS bundle game for the first time starting today. These app packages tend to bring some great value and the new 2K Editors’ Choice Strategy Bundle is no exception.

1Password secure password manager for Mac: $35 or $28 w/ .edu (Reg. $50)

1Password is arguably one of the best password management system around, and certainly one of our favorite. Today, it is on sale at the Mac App Store for $34.99. At regular $50, this is matching the best price we have seen on the Mac App Store and within $7 of a limited promo code deal from over 3 months ago. We haven’t seen it go for less on the Mac App Store in over a year.

However, those with access to a .edu email address can get the Mac app for even less. Over on the official AgileBits shop, 1Password for Mac is just $27.99 using a .edu email address during checkout. That’s matching our previous limited promo price and the best we have seen in over a year. Student and faculty members are eligible for the discounted rate and should checkout using a .edu email. If you don’t have a .edu email, you can checkout with your regular email but you should have an active student/faculty ID available in case you’re contacted by AgileBits

Keep in mind, you will get updates faster purchasing the app directly from Agile, but there is no iCloud syncing like the Mac App Store version. Agile’s purchase does support Dropbox for cross-platforming syncing though (Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, and Windows Phone).

Gears of War creator reveals the first gameplay footage for his new gravity-defying FPS

Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski and his new development studio Boss Key Productions recently debuted its very first project: LawBreakers. As many expected Cliffy B is dropping another shooter, but this time it’s in the first person and in a post-catastrophe setting.

LawBreakers is looking to set itself apart from typical futuristic, multiplayer shooters while still pulling inspiration from titles like Titanfall, Overwatch and Battleborn. There looks to be a strong focus on the connection between gameplay, the lore, and in turn, the somewhat unique looking classes. As you can see in the gameplay footage above, from the Assassin’s double jump to the Skirmisher’s jet-pack, and Cronos’ (tank class) rocket-jump, there looks to be a strong focus on traversal as well.

As for the specifics of the setting and story, humans have shattered the moon through failed experiments causing a number of geographical instabilities on earth. As a result, the planet has been rocked by earthquakes and left with a number of low-gravity areas that players can use to their advantage. While humanity has managed to re-build itself, the LawBreakers must be deployed to get a handle on the series of violent gangs that have cropped up in the aftermath. You can get more details in the debut announcement trailer:

As of now, we know this is a free-to-play, multiplayer-driven FPS set for release in 2016. We still have no details on in-game purchases, early beta access or even which platforms it will appear on.

Head to our roundups for the best gaming deals everyday of the week.

SmartHalo adds simple smartphone-connected navigation to your bike’s handlebars

These mesmerizing auto-Mario Maker levels will take you on the ride of a lifetime

With the highly anticipated release of Super Mario Maker just around the corner now, more and more interesting bits of information about the game are popping up. As if those sweet easter eggs spotted in the title screen and the impressive looking level creations we have seen thus far weren’t cool enough as it is, we can’t seem to take our eyes off these mesmerizing auto-Mario levels.

Automatic Mario levels are those that require the player to do little else but go right and watch as the beauty of Nintendo’s worlds unfold before your eyes. In some cases the player has to do nothing at all but watch as Mario zips through a very carefully created, almost choreographed level. In most cases, if you do anything other than what you’re told to do, you die.

You can see a few of these highly detailed automatic Mario style levels created in Mario Maker below:

For years this type of level creation has existed among modders and hackers of older Mario games. Here is a pretty fantastic one made in Super Mario World:

After the amiibo support, that awesome Mario Maker Wii U bundle and these roller coaster-like Mario courses, the game really can’t come soon enough. The chromatic music note blocks avialable to players in Mario Maker will surely be making some pretty amazing appearances in auto levels over the coming months as well.

Super Mario Maker’s playable title screen is loaded with awesome secrets

After some pretty amazing looking level creations, the ability to create stages while seamlessly switching between 4 different titles, and some amiibo support, Super Mario Maker has certainly caught our attention. Set to release just around the corner now, reviewers have begun to dig in to early copies and have noticed some sweet little easter eggs hidden on the title screen.

Inspired by Mario Paint and Super Mario World, the opening screen has Mario traversing a typical course with the Super Mario Maker title overlay on top. If you touch the letters a number of playful, Nintendo-style animations play out including a sweet Wario reference on the M, a hidden cache of coins in the R, space ships, helmets, bouncy things and you can even hatch Mario a Yoshi.

Here’s a great video from GameXplain showing them off:

Super Mario Maker releases on September 11th and Prime members can pre-order it for $49.99 shipped (Reg. $60). An even more notable deal than some of the other early Prime deals considering how rarely first part Nintendo games go on sale.

You can learn more about Mario Maker from our E3 coverage and here are a few amazing levels that were created for the Nintendo World Championships 2015:
