It’s a crowded world for those in the wearable and fitness tracking industry. Now with Apple breathing down the neck of the competition, it is key for these companies to find a way to stand out. Up and comer Atlas is beginning to detail its new Wristband, which offers a number of interesting features. This uniquely designed fitness tracker has one standout feature, the ability to recognize and track different workout activities using a proprietary algorithm. Not just, swimming versus running, but butterfly versus backstroke. Or push-ups versus triangle push-ups.
The design is fairly unique too, think Pebble Watch meets Nike Fuelband.
Apple has hand picked 8bit Doves to be the Free App of the Week. It is normally listed on the App Store for $2.99, but can now be downloaded for free on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Admittedly, I am a bit of a bag connoisseur. Hauling around all my gear requires a well thought-out solution that not only keeps my stuff organized but also looks good doing it. There are plenty of bag options out there, but less that offer charging solutions and even fewer that do it well. Today we’ve spotted a new company that is aiming to solve on-the-go charging challenges and device storage. Through Indiegogo, AMPL has raised over $213,000 towards “the worlds smartest backpack”.
The SmartBag has a number of unique and interesting design cues, most notably providing a USB port in every pocket. However, the real question is how many times can it recharge your gadgets?

Update (3/9 7:25am): After a delay, Best Buy has officially launched the new $30 pricing online.
I’ve previously told you about the fantastic savings gamers can achieve through Best Buy’s Gamers Club Unlocked (GCU), which offers 20% discounts on new games (and a bunch of other benefits) for two full years. Today, Best Buy announced that it’s officially dropping the price of GCU from $100 to $30 starting March 8, with membership to be available online and in stores. That matches the lowest GCU price Best Buy has offered.
Best Buy notes that Nintendo’s amiibo are also part of the deal: just like new games, 20% off an Amiibo on day one is probably the best deal you’ll find anywhere. See our amiibo guide for a list of the current and upcoming toys you’ll be able to get discounts on.
Many gamers will find that the $30 Unlocked membership pays for itself in one month, with 23 months of additional great deals. You save $12 every time you purchase a $60 game, and can get an additional $10 pre-order bonus for upcoming games including Batman: Arkham Knight, Halo 5: Guardians, and Mortal Kombat X, chopping their prices to $38 each. Update (3/3 2:37pm): Sony has just announced its free PlayStation Plus titles for March, which we’ve added below. The PlayStation Plus games will be available on the service later today.
Each month, Microsoft’s Xbox Live Gold and Sony’s PlayStation Plus services give away a handful of free games to subscribers, adding value to each company’s multi-console online gaming service. Here are the titles from both services:
For PlayStation Plus, Sony is giving away two PlayStation 4-only games: Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee — New ‘n’ Tasty! (normally $30), the updated version of the classic side-scroller, as well as the cartoony World War 1-inspired game Valiant Hearts: The Great War (normally $15). It’s also offering two PlayStation 3-only titles, the adventure-puzzlers Papo & Yo (normally $10) and Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments (normally $50). PS Vita owners get the skateboard game OlliOlli2: Welcome to Olliwood (normally $15) and the adventure game CounterSpy (normally $15), both of which are also available for the PS4; CounterSpy is also free for the PS3. The total value of this month’s games alone is in excess of $130, and with new free games every month, a one-year PlayStation Plus membership ($50) or $18 three-month membership gives you a lot to play for a comparatively small amount of money.
This will be a great month for Xbox Live Gold members. Microsoft is giving away the 2D action-platformer Rayman Legends (normally $40) to Xbox One players all month long. From March 1 to the 15th, Xbox 360 players get the phenomenal 3D adventure game Tomb Raider (reg. $20) — topic of one of our Gaming For Couples articles — then the incredible first-person shooter Bioshock Infinite (normally $30) from the 16th to the 31st. A one-year Xbox Live Gold membership is normally $60, but there’s a “Limited Time Offer” direct from Microsoft: $39.99. Given the value of games given away each month, and the other benefits it offers (other discounted games, online multiplayer), Xbox Live Gold is now a no-brainer purchase for Xbox owners.
Full descriptions of this month’s titles are below.

This invaluable offer makes you suddenly indispensable, as you master integration with 3rd-party APIs like Facebook and more; “Storyboard” helps you create appealing, cleanly-designed products using Apple’s fantastic GUI. Break it down to the nitty-gritty by building to detect and accommodate any size screen. Store data on the device, or use Apple’s new Cloudkit tool to host your database. Oh…and it’ll teach you how to pull analytics, as well. We hear those are important.
These knowledge-rich 350 videos and 36.5 hours of content will get you building apps in no time. You know…the ones everyone needs, but no one’s made. Yet.
This close-to-a-thousand-dollar value is yours for just $89…no catch, except that we are running out of this pre-release. So click through to instantly get access to the knowledge you need. All you need is an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X Snow Leopard or later.
The prices of high-capacity hard drives have dropped so much recently that it makes sense to upgrade everything from desktop computers to laptops and game consoles. For iMacs, Mac Pros and MacBooks, my strong recommendation has been Solid State Drives (SSDs), which combine increasingly attractive capacities with super-fast speeds, but for game consoles, traditional hard disks are the right choice. Nintendo actively warns Wii U owners against using SSDs, while Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4 provide little reason to prefer them.
Why the difference? Unlike Macs, where solid state drives deliver huge speed increases across OS X and apps, game consoles tend to achieve only modestly better loading times with SSDs — a few seconds here or there. Traditional hard drives also deliver much higher storage capacities, fixing an obvious issue with game consoles where 40-50GB patch downloads are becoming the new normal. A 500GB PlayStation 4 arrives with only around 400GB of free space, versus 360GB on a 500GB Xbox One, and a mere 25GB on a 32GB Wii U. Whether you’re updating Halo or downloading DLC for Mario Kart 8, you’re eating up a big chunk of your hard drive’s space.
What are the best hard drives for your console? Most of my top picks are currently available for $100 or less, and I tend to focus on great value for the dollar rather than cheap picks that will break quickly. I’ll run through the options below.

Technology has created a much more accessible world, with nearly everything right at our fingertips. The thing is, sometimes we still just want easier access to a button, switch or that USB port in the back of your computer. Satechi has set out to solve this problem with three Bluetooth-enabled buttons meant to interact with a myriad of devices.
The BT Button Series is a trilogy of stick-on thin circles that pair with a device via Bluetooth and enables the user to complete certain tasks. They come in a slim circle design with an aluminum metal outer edge and are compatible with iOS devices and Android OS 4.4.4 or later. From selfies to Siri, these products have an eye for making digital life just a touch more accessible – head below to find out how.
Good news coming down the pipeline for students and teachers this week: Microsoft has announced that they will be offering a free Office 365 subscription to anyone, worldwide, with an eligible email address. This includes a 1TB OneDrive allotment and free download of Microsoft Office software on up to five PCs or Macs and five mobile devices (iOS, Android and Windows). Previously, this was offered in the United States but has since expanded to the rest of the world.
A personal subscription typically retails for $9.99/month or $99/year, so this has some nice savings potential. This is big news on the iOS side of things, previously a subscription was required to get the full benefits of the app, something that has been much discussed since its initial release.
To check your eligibility (or your child’s), head over to the student account page, likewise for teachers. After entering your school provided email address, you’ll receive a confirmation email with details on finalizing your subscription and download links to grab the software. The main requirement is for your educational institution to have previously purchased Microsoft Office, if you are a user at school then you’ll likely be eligible for this deal.
Not eligible for free Office 365? Qualifying tablets from Best Buy now include a Office 365 subscription or you can grab via this HP Stream deal from Microsoft. Dropbox users still have the opportunity to add quite a bit of OneDrive storage for free.
We’ve also rounded up the best student discounts on electronics, food, games and more.
Students worldwide can now check eligibility for free Office from their school
Last week, at a public event held by the New York City Department of Education, New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito announced free Office for all of their 1.1M students plus teachers. The room—filled with students and teachers—erupted with cheers.
But New York is not alone.
Millions of students around the world are eligible for free Office from their school and today we are announcing that we’ve made it easy for all eligible students globally to sign up themselves to get Office 365 and install free Office.*
That includes the 5.5 million eligible students in Australia, the nearly 5 million eligible students in Germany, 7 million more in Brazil, 1.3 million at Anadolu University in Turkey, every student in Hong Kong and millions more.
This service was previously available only in the U.S., but beginning today it can be accessed by any eligible student or teacher where Office 365 is available. You’ll need a valid school email address to complete the sign up.
To check if you’re eligible for free Office from your school:
Students getting Office at no additional cost to schools is a benefit Microsoft provides to education institutions that buy Office for faculty and staff. That means teachers can also sign up and enjoy all the benefits of Office connected to a cloud service, like using the OneNote Class Notebook.
Once signed up for Office 365 you get:
Feel free to cheer.

We created the weekly column Gaming For Couples to help you find excellent games to play with your significant other — someone who might not yet be into gaming as much as you, but could be won over with the right game picks. Here’s a roundup of our past nine columns, which contain a bunch of great games, plus recommendations of the best console bundles, demos, and accessories to pick!

Column 2: A column focused on Fireproof Games’ iOS and Android steampunk puzzle games The Room, The Room Pocket, and The Room 2.
Column 3: Focused on the console edition of board game Monopoly Plus, this column discusses what happens when you choose the wrong game to play with your significant other; “if at first you don’t succeed, try again”
Column 4: A top pick for couples and families, this looks at the best Nintendo Wii U bundle, games, demos and accessories, including the awesome Super Mario 3D World.
Column 5: A guide to the best Microsoft Xbox One bundles, games, demos and accessories, such as Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham.
Column 6: Our look at the best Sony PlayStation 4 bundles, games, demos and accessories, including The Last of Us: Remastered.
Column 7: We look at the better-than-movie-quality multi-console game Tomb Raider Definitive Edition, and NES Remix Pack for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.
Column 8: Featuring multi-console cartoony platformer Rayman Legends, this edition also looks at Amiibos and the PlayStation 4 Camera — some Valentine’s Day picks for gamers.
Column 9: Two budget-priced Nintendo Wii U titles — Captain Toad Treasure Tracker and Kirby & The Rainbow Curse — plus related Nintendo 3DS games and Amiibo figurines.
Some of my other gaming columns include budget PlayStation 4, Wii U, and Xbox One games worth second looks, and a guide to the entire lineup of Nintendo Amiibos, Enjoy!

A few interesting gaming console deals surfaced over the weekend including some of the best values we’ve seen on both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 since Black Friday. Amazon is offering a new exclusive Xbox One Assassin’s Creed Unity bundle with an extra wireless controller (Reg. $54+) and Wolfenstein The New Order (Reg. $40) for $349 shipped ($443+ value). This is the current best deal available considering the nearly $100 in value added with the additional controller and game.
As for PlayStation, Best Buy is offering a brand new PS4 with The Last of Us, $5 off 1 yr. of PlayStation Plus and a free PlayStation TV for $399.99 shipped. With the free $70+ PS TV thrown in, this is the best value available for Sony’s latest console and well under the deals currently available from Amazon and other retailers.
Stay locked to Toys, as your complete list of today’s best gaming deals is on its way shortly.
As I’ve said in a prior Gaming For Couples column, Nintendo’s Wii U is “the best current-generation console for couples and families, hands-down.” If you’re trying to convince your significant other to pick up a controller, the games that are most likely to make that happen are on the Wii U, and many of them come from Nintendo itself.
Today’s Gaming For Couples looks at two affordable Nintendo releases, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and Kirby & The Rainbow Curse. Each one features one of Nintendo’s cutest characters, and is designed to appeal to casual gamers with bunches of easily digestible levels. Rather than selling them for $60 each and then discounting them, Nintendo launched both games at $40 — bargain day-one pricing for current-generation console games — and plans to keep them there. Below, I’ll discuss the games, the Amiibo figures that work with them, and some earlier titles featuring the same great characters.
Rovio, creators of the hit game Angry Birds, has announced its latest iOS and Android offering ‘Jolly Jam’. Playing off the popular connect-three matching style of gaming, Jolly Jam has visual cues that will remind gamers of Candy Crush.
This puzzle based game focuses on matching like colors from corner to corner using a drag and highlight style of play. The idea is for users to draw boxes around matching jellies to complete levels with combo attacks and special jellies releasing colorful explosions. With ‘endless’ levels of play, Jolly Jam is highlighted by bright colors and sounds through gameplay.
Jolly Jam is available now for free on iPhone, iPad and Android devices.

Apple has selected Duet Game as its Free App of the Week. Sitting with 5 stars from nearly 7,000 reviewers and regularly listed at $2.99, this is only the second time we have seen the minimalistic puzzle platformer go free.

UPDATED! Ever since Nintendo released the hit game Super Smash. Bros for the Wii U, demand for Nintendo’s classic GameCube controllers (and adapters to use them) has surged. Nintendo’s official GameCube to Wii U controller adapter remains hard to find and subject to price-gouging at $70-$100 through resellers, so third-party options have popped up at more reasonable prices. Since our readers and editors alike are Smash Bros. fans, we wanted to quickly point out some of the most popular GameCube adapters and controllers that are currently available, and much more affordable at $25-$30…
Update February 17, 2015: Gamestop is currently offering a $50 bundle of a Wii U GameCube Adapter and one GameCube controller, to ship May 1. If you’re holding out for the official Adapter, this is the easiest way to guarantee you’ll get one.

Over the last few weeks, Gaming For Couples has spotlighted the best PlayStation 4 bundles, best Wii U bundles, and best Xbox One bundles — now we’re back to our regularly scheduled programming, looking at great games for couples (including gamers and non-gamers) to play together. This week, we’re featuring two very different titles: a retro game that even casual players will enjoy actively exploring, and the other a modern game more impressively cinematic than the movies that share its name. Each can be had for under $30.
Our Gaming For Couples selections are Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition by Square Enix for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and NES Remix Pack / Ultimate NES Remix for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. Here’s why we think they’re worth your time…
Club Nintendo, the rewards program for Nintendo Wii U, Wii, and 3DS users, today posted its final Rewards Catalog to let members redeem coins collected before March 31, 2015. There are 42 Wii U titles, 28 Wii titles, and 48 3DS downloads to choose from with coin values ranging from 150 to 850 coins, plus a collection of 13 physical items ranging from greeting cards and posters to t-shirts and bags. Additional final gifts not requiring additional coins will be announced for Gold and Platinum “Elite” members on April 1, and redemption of coins will end on June 30, 2015.
Coins for the Club Nintendo program primarily stacked up with 16-digit codes found inside Nintendo game packages, but also came from eShop downloads, Nintendo console registrations, and completing Nintendo surveys. If you haven’t yet checked your Nintendo Wii U, Wii, or 3DS titles for these codes, now would be a good time to look for them inside the front lids of game boxes, and redeem them at club.nintendo.com.

Each month, Sony’s PlayStation Plus and Microsoft’s Xbox Live Gold services give away a handful of free games to subscribers, adding value to each company’s multi-console online gaming service. February’s games have been announced, including the following free titles:
For PlayStation Plus, Sony is offering the futuristic PS4 action/strategy RPG Transistor and PS4 ancient Greece-themed action-platformer Apotheon. PS3 owners get the Japanese sandbox action/RPG Yakuza 4 and first-person action/stealth game Thief. PS Vita users get Rogue Legacy and Kick & Fennick; Rogue Legacy is also available for the PS3 and PS4. All of the titles become free to PS Plus users on February 3. Transistor regularly sells for $20, Thief for $40, and Yakuza 4 for $50, making a one-year PlayStation Plus membership ($50) or $18 three-month membership a no-brainer alternative.
For Xbox Live Gold members, Microsoft is giving away the 8-bit-inspired future arena ball game #IDARB (reg. $15) for the Xbox One, as well as the action/RPG/puzzler Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (reg. $15) and Sniper Elite V2 (shown above, reg. $30) for the Xbox 360. A one-year Xbox Live Gold membership is normally $60 and a three-month membership is normally $25, but you can grab the biggie for only $40 on Amazon right now!
New games are typically offered at the beginning of each month, with old games disappearing from the “free” lists above. Full descriptions of this month’s titles are below.
