The third week offerings for Nintendo’s Throwback Sale have just gone public, after last week’s release of Punch-Out!! for Wii U and the prior week’s deal on Super Mario Galaxy 2 for Wii U. Once again, you only have one week to grab a single steeply-discounted Wii U title from Nintendo’s eShop, plus smaller discounts on several Wii U and 3DS releases.
This week’s star attraction is Nintendo’s Wii U version of Metroid Prime: Trilogy, the 2009 Wii collection of Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption in one download for $9.99 (reg. $20 digital). Discontinued and previously selling for as much as $300 on disc for the Wii, Metroid Prime: Trilogy is an excellent value for the Wii U. A Wii Remote and Nunchuk are required to play the game. Also available for the next week at reduced prices are:
Reports have suggested that Nintendo will continue to release additional Wii games such as Sin & Punishment 2 for the Wii U, but it’s unclear whether they’ll be part of the Throwback sale. Some of the Wii ports will no longer require special Wii controllers to play on the Wii U; others (including Super Mario Galaxy 2, Punch-Out!!, and Metroid Prime: Trilogy) unfortunately do.
Check out our Wii U Buyers’ Guide for recommendations on the right Wii U bundles, accessories, and games to purchase, as well as our daily gaming deals for additional discounts. Pre-order deals for Kirby: The Rainbow Curse ($50) and Mario Party 10 ($50) are amongst many we’re currently tracking!
Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve looked at the best bundles, games, demos and accessories for Nintendo’s Wii U and Microsoft’s Xbox One. Today, it’s Sony’s turn. Everyone agrees that the PlayStation 4 is the most powerful game console on the market, with a great collection of exclusive and cross-platform games, and a bright future ahead. Nearly 20 million PS4s have already been sold around the world, giving developers confidence that they can reach a large audience with anything they release.
The PlayStation 4 officially sells for $399.99, but the 9to5Toys team is here to save you money on the console — including free games — and show you the best couple-friendly titles, demos, and accessories out there. Read on!

Developed by former Apple engineers, the Duet Display app allows you to use your iPad or iPhone as an extra display for your Mac. The setup requires both an iOS app, which typically runs for $15.99 (after a $9.99 introductory price for a short time) and a Mac companion app that is free, but today the iOS side of things has dropped to its lowest price ever: $7.99.

If you are interested in a better sleep experience, but find the Sleep Cycle app or an expensive mattress aren’t the answer, you may want to check out the Luna smart mattress cover. What was born out of an Indiegogo campaign is set to become a reality later this year. Instead of re-making an entire mattress, that would ultimately prove to be very costly, Luna is a mattress cover that fits many beds. It is covered in sensors, which helps track your movement, sleeping habits and interacts with your data to monitor your overall health.

Our last Gaming For Couples article looked at Nintendo’s Wii U as a complete package — it’s arguably the easiest console to recommend to casual gamers, lapsed players, and young families. But Microsoft’s Xbox One has started to surge as an alternative. For only $50 more than the Wii U, you get a much more powerful console, and unlike Nintendo, Microsoft has the support of a huge number of third-party developers.
There’s another big difference: even top-selling Xbox One games are discounted, which makes this console a great choice to play both Microsoft exclusives and cross-platform releases. In this week’s Gaming For Couples, we walk through the best Xbox One bundle options, as well as the top couple-friendly games, demos, and accessories out there.
Newegg offers the Klipsch STATUS Over-Ear Headphones in white for $84.99 shipped. This is $165 off the original price, $35 better than Amazon’s current listing and the lowest that we’ve ever seen this set go for by $15. These headphones are rated 4.5/5 stars by 60 Amazon customers.
These STATUS headphones are made of a Grilamid TR frame which provides a “nearly indestructible construction.” They also feature ear cup rotation, full range 40mm dynamic drivers and have in-line mic controls for iOS and Android devices. Additionally, they come with a 2-year limited warranty.
For more headphones, check out our roundup from earlier this week.

This week’s free app courtesy of the App Store is Shades: A Simple Puzzle Game. The puzzler is regularly listed at $1.99 and is now available to download for free on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Outside of a 3 day sale back in October of 2014, this is the only other time we have seen the game go free.

Punch-Out!! is a well-regarded sequel to the classic arcade, NES, and SNES franchise, where boxer Little Mac fights a huge collection of cartoony opponents. Some may have been disappointed when Gearbox announced the latest entry to the Borderlands series was coming in the form of The Pre-Sequel and only for last gen consoles, but today the company has unveiled the start of its next gen plans.
While not the brand new Borderlands game you were hoping for, the folks at Gearbox have announced a next gen version of Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The-Pre Sequel coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 with the new Handsome Collection. This edition will also pack in the massive list of add-on DLC content for both titles (full list below).
Along with some cool new enhancements like updated visuals and 4-way couch co-op, we are also getting the Claptrap-in-a-Box Edition which brings the series’ titular character to life like never before…

It looks as though a brand new mobile Avatar game is coming to iOS and Android, according to a recent announcement from the official Facebook page. While director James Cameron has already publicly delayed the next Avatar films until what appears to be late 2017, gamers should be getting the new Avatar: Warrior’s Journey by spring of this year.
At this point there aren’t many details available on what to expect from the upcoming “return to Pandora,” but the brief description given sounds as though we are getting an endless runner that may have a few tricks up its sleeves. Players will be taking on the role of a young Na’vi to “run, dodge, and ride…through the stunning world of James Cameron’s AVATAR.”
We can also expect some kind of light upgrade system. “As your skill grows, you will earn abilities, outfits, and ultimately your own place amongst the clans.”
There are no pricing details just yet, but the previous Avatar game that came out alongside its record breaking Hollywood counterpart film was available for $4.99 when it released.

The story goes, as told by co-founder Andrew Allen, that Paper by FiftyThree started out of a love for analog products. That four Microsoft colleagues turned friends with the resources of a Fortune 500 company found a greater passion in a pencil, scissors…and paper. Often Andew, Georg Petschnigg, Jonathan Harris and Julian Walker would sit down and discuss their ideas, talking about possibilities that bounced around in their heads. These brainstorming sessions would always be recorded on a scrap, or coffee filter, napkin or Moleskin, notably they weren’t writing in Word or the like – they were writing everything out.
The feeling of analog products, the feel of cutting paper or dragging a pencil across paper. How do they bring that feeling to a digital world? It was at that point, they bunkered down in a 5th floor New York apartment and set out to re-imagine digital design. They set out to make Paper.

The free app of the week courtesy of Apple is Marvel Pinball. The Zen Studios developed pinball game is regularly listed at $1, and can now be downloaded for free on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Announced this morning during its Nintendo Direct video series, Nintendo has launched a new Throwback Sale in its eShop for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. While most of Nintendo’s discounts aren’t particularly newsworthy, this one is a better deal than most, because each week includes a steeply-discounted Wii U title, plus smaller discounts on several Wii U and 3DS releases.
The biggest steal in the bunch is Super Mario Galaxy 2 at an all-time price low of $9.99 (reg. $20 digital, $36 on disc), which is today being offered for the first time as a digital download for the Wii U. As the flagship original Wii Super Mario game, Galaxy 2 features an interstellar theme with completely 3-D planets. Also available for the next week at reduced prices are:
Next week, Punch-Out!! will become available for the Wii U, followed by Metroid Prime Trilogy one week later. Nintendo has indicated that some Wii games – unfortunately not Super Mario Galsy 2, we’ve learned – will no longer require special Wii controllers to play on the Wii U. Check out our Wii U Buyers’ Guide for recommendations on the right Wii U bundles, accessories, and games to purchase, as well as our daily Wii U deals for additional discounts.
Following a successful launch in Japan and Australia last year, Nintendo today officially announced the New Nintendo 3DS XL for a North American release on February 13, 2015. The New 3DS XL has a faster processor than the original 3DS XL, integrated NFC support for Amiibo figurines, a second analog joystick with extra shoulder buttons, and fixes the original models’ 3-D display problems by using a new face-tracking camera.
Pre-orders for the portable will likely begin today, with four color options:
Nintendo notably declined to announce the smaller New Nintendo 3DS, which was released in Japan and Australia alongside the New 3DS XL last year. Expect to see many closeout deals on the older models on 9to5Toys starting today. We’ll update this post with additional preorder links as they become available.
Also announced today were two new collections of Amiibo figurines (see our Guide, here):

Nintendo’s Wii U will likely be remembered as the most misunderstood major game console ever released. As the sequel to Wii – which sold over 100 million consoles – the Wii U is a true 1080p HD console, plays all of the Wii’s games, and even includes a screen on its packed-in controller. It’s also the best current-generation console for couples and families, hands-down. But it had a slow start due to weak early software support, only getting mega-hit games in mid-2014, and many people didn’t realize that it was actually an all-new console.
Today, a bunch of great Nintendo exclusives are available, and more are on the way – it’s finally a great time to buy a Wii U. That’s what we just did, so for this week’s edition of Gaming For Couples, we’re going to walk you through the best titles, accessories, and deals we’ve found, helping you to do the same.

In celebration of CES 2015, gaming peripheral company Razer has announced a special sale starting this evening at 9pm EST. It will be handing out one-time use promo codes that will net customers 50% off peripherals or 30% off Razer systems on the RazerStore. All of the company’s highly rated gadgets and systems are eligible including headsets, controllers, keyboards and the Blade gaming systems.
Although fairly straight forward, there are a few steps to run through in order to receive the promo code:
Update (1/14 8:00am): Amazon is now offering the Sennheiser MM30i headphones (iOS version) for $24.99 Prime shipped. That’s $35 under the original listing and the best price we’ve seen by $5.
Adorama is offering the Sennheiser MM 30G Noise Isolating in-ear headset for $19.95 shipped. That’s $55 under the original listing, around $30 under the average selling price, $10 below Amazon and the best we’ve seen. While the audio aspect will work anyway, these are the Samsung Galaxy version of the headphones, so you should double check to see if the remote/mic controls will work with your Android device before purchasing. The iOS model is still available at an all-time low of $28.95.
Features:
The MM30s have received a 4/5 star rating from over 160 Amazon customers.

IGN has just announced that Valiant Hearts: The Great War for iOS is its free iOS game for the month of January. Typically priced at $4.99, Ubisoft’s interactive comic book iPad/iPhone game is “a mix of exploration, action and puzzles.” Its deep story was inspired by letters from World War 1. Thousands of App Store users rate it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Note: you must go through IGN’s special promo page to unlock your free download. If you go directly to the App Store you’ll see the retail price of $5.

Our prior Gaming For Couples articles have focused on “slam dunk” titles – games that are highly likely to appeal to both people in a couple for various reasons. But for this week’s column, I decided to try something different: picking a niche, relatively unknown game that seemed on the surface to be a really good fit for my murder mystery-loving spouse, but didn’t wind up working out. I’m sharing the story because it was a valuable learning experience, and how we handled it might help you get out of a similar jam.
We wound up buying a classic board game she liked, instead. And in retrospect, just doing that in the first place would have been a lot easier. Read on for the story.

Update (1/11 10:00am): Sling TV is now accepting requests to try its service, it is currently invite-only so you’ll have to submit your information and hope for the opportunity to get in early!
DISH is looking to revolutionize home entertainment by offering a smaller package of popular channels, without contract, for just $20 per month. Focusing on a handful of popular channels has allowed for DISH to put together a competitive product, dubbed Sling TV, that falls between the Netflix/Hulu and full cable TV price points. With ESPN, TNT and TBS, Sling TV is making a strong case for your living room.
There are however a few key differences from other offerings that make this an interesting proposition, including a special offer for Xbox One users.
One Call (99.9% positive feedback) via eBay Daily Deals offers the JBL OnBeat Venue LT Bluetooth speaker with Lightning dock for $109 shipped. This is a savings of $130 off the original price, $10 better than Amazon and a match of the lowest price that we’ve seen in new condition.
Features:
At Amazon, this speaker dock is rated 4.1/5 stars by 41 customers.
The Internet Archive keeps raising its game, or at least adding more. After bringing back 900 classic arcade games last year, they’ve doubled down this week by offering close to 2,400 MS-DOS titles for free. These games are available to play right in your browser without any installation required…
The home automation sector of consumer technology continues to grow and generally improve, as more devices gain “smart” functionality. We’ve seen a number of products enter the fray during Q4 of 2014, but it’s yet to be seen whether any one company is ready to bring it all together in a truly mainstream way. While we continue to wait on Apple HomeKit-compatible devices, we had the opportunity to spend some time with products from SmartThings, a Washington, DC-based company that promises an “easy, open and limitless” smart home experience.
As many of you already know/experienced first hand, the PlayStation Network suffered outages over the holidays due to a denial-of-service attack courtesy of a malicious hacker group. The company’s VP of Sony Entertainment Network, Eric Lempel, announced that those affected by the downtime will be receiving a free extension to their PS Plus memberships. Anyone who had an active PlayStation Plus subscription (or free trial) on December 25th, 2014, will be receiving a free 5 day extension to their accounts.
The extension will automatically be applied at a later date, according to Lempel. Those with a trial or subscription that ends before the extension goes live will receive the bonus 5 days anyway.
On top of that, Sony is also handing out 10% discount codes “as a thank you to all PSN members.” The code will come available “sometime” this month and will be good for a one-time discount off a total cart purchase on everything from games and add-ons to TV shows, movies and more.
We will keep you posted on when the extension and discount codes go live, in the mean time you can check out our daily game roundups for all the best deals across all platforms.

ChAIR Entertainment has dropped the latest entry in its popular sword-fighting action game, Infinity Blade III, down to just $1 for the holidays. Typically listed at $6.99, this is the lowest we have seen the game go for by $2. At $10 for the entire Trilogy, today’s deal is still a better value than the previous Black Friday bundle by more than $2.
Widely regarded as some of the best mobile games out there, the Infinity Blade series brings together “adrenaline-fueled” action with some of the best visuals on the platform. As the epic conclusion for the three part series, IB3 introduces a new playable character as well as a more fine tuned experience overall within a much larger, dynamic 3D world. Along with voice work from famous actor Troy Baker (BioShock, The Last of Us, Far Cry 4, COD: Advanced Warfare, Batman Arkham, many more), it has the “most detailed story scenes ever shown” on mobile platforms:
Siris and Isa have joined with the God-King Raidriar in a desperate attempt to destroy the Worker of Secrets and his army of Deathless titans. Uncover new mysteries to wield the power of the Infinity Blade in this timeless adventure of champions and villains.

Best Buy offers its 2-year Gamers Club Unlocked (GCU) Membership for $30 with free shipping. As a pricing comparison, it carries a list price of $99.99 and this is the best dollar off discount we’ve ever seen. Usually Best Buy will only discount the GCU as part of a bundle. It’s a perfect gift for the gamer who has everything now, but is going to want more games in the near future.
GCU membership gives you 20% off all video games for two years, so it will more than pay for itself after buying three new releases at the typical retail price of $60. It’s great for avid gamers who want day 1 games at day 30 or day 60 prices, guaranteeing that you’ll never pay full retail for any game for two years. GCU also accrues points that lead to further discounts over time.
