Just over a week ago we covered Amazon’s plans to halt its discounted video game pre-order pricing. The now-defunct offering gave gamers 20% off pre-orders, saving them in most cases about $12 per game since the majority of triple-A titles cost $60 at launch. The news is not all-bad though, Amazon will still offer a $10 credit for pre-orders of select titles, but customers will need to wait 35 days to get their money back and even at that point, it is an Amazon promotional credit.

Financing the latest technology is more popular than ever before. For over a couple of years now, mobile carriers have been pushing customers to pay monthly for smartphones instead of signing contracts. Most of these companies have phased out contracts entirely, forcing consumers to either pay for their phone upfront or pay for it over the course of several years. Today, Microsoft is taking a page out of these companies’ playbooks with the launch of Xbox All Access. Mobile game sensation Monument Valley launched some 4 years ago now and has been downloaded more than 160 million times. Developer Ustwo Games followed up the critically acclaimed original with a sequel in the summer of 2017 and has since racked up loads of Apple Design Awards, an iPad Game of the Year trophy and a pair of BAFTAs for for Best British Game and Best Mobile & Handheld Game. And now it looks like Paramount Pictures has tapped director Patrick Osborne to bring the game to the big screen.

Well, it’s that time of year again. All of the major gaming giants are beginning to unveil special bundle offers and limited edition consoles in preparation for the big shopping season in a few months time. Sony dropped the new 500 million Limited Edition PS4 Pro and Microsoft unveiled some new wireless controllers with more coming down the pipeline next week. Nintendo is already set for a massive holiday season with the release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate just before Christmas along with the Limited Edition package, but now we are getting our first glimpse at the hardware offerings coming for the end of 2018.

A hot topic lately in the gaming world has been cross-platform playing, and while most manufacturers support this, not everyone is on board. Sony is known for being somewhat hostile toward cross-platform gaming, most notably with Fortnite issues when it comes to those on Nintendo’s Switch.

Well, we might finally get a good resolution out of this. Bethesda, one of the world’s largest game studios, recently was interviewed by Game Informer about its upcoming title The Elder Scrolls: Legends. In the interview, the game studio said it might be looking to pressure companies into allowing cross-platform playing or face the potential of not having the latest Elder Scrolls game released for that system.

DOOM as a game has been around since the early 1990’s and has stayed somewhat relevant throughout the years. First released for MS-DOS, then Sega, SNES, Playstation, Game Boy, Xbox, and eventually making its way to next-gen consoles and even iPhone, this unique game has yet to die throughout the years.

In 2016, it was completely rebuilt and released for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Switch followed suit in 2017, and now its time for the next generation to take its flight. Doom Eternal is the sequel to the 2016 reboot and will launch for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One concurrently, and we got a glimpse of some gameplay footage today at QuakeCon 2018. Nintendo Switch was also mentioned, but we’re not 100% sure on the release date there.

Originally released back in April, the reboot of God of War was certainly a highly anticipated title ahead of its launch. But we’re not sure anyone expected something this incredible. Widely regarded as one of the best PlayStation exclusives ever released and most definitely the biggest of the year, God of War squashed expectations with its incredible visuals, seamless cinematic approach, memorable characters and a somewhat drastic move to over-the-shoulder third person combat. The game is triumphant on just about every measure and is about to get even better at the end of the month.

Back in May, Nintendo announced that it would be bringing back its much-beloved NES Classic after the console was constantly sold out back in 2016 during its initial run. Turns out, the decision to revive the retro reboot was a good one. Last night, we got word that the NES Classic was the best-selling console on the market in 2018. Destiny is a beloved gaming franchise from Bungie that people play on every platform. I’ve been a huge fan of the series from the first game on my original Xbox One, and now own Destiny 2 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Destiny 2 was great at the beginning, but quickly flittered out and I lost interested like with the original game.

This is something that Destiny is known for, launching with a fairly decent game that’s fun for a while, but not really becoming a must-play until a few updates later. Well, we’re at those updates, and Destiny 2: Forsaken is just around the corner, promising the “most transformative moment in Destiny 2.”

Nintendo has an incredibly successful console generation with the Switch. The console has smashed records all over the place and is nearing 20 million in total sales. All of that sounds pretty impressive but the numbers have started to slide over the last quarter or so. After reporting 2.93 million and 7.23 million units sold in the previous two quarters, sales have slowed down to 1.88 million in the most recent three-month period. That number is still quite high, especially considering it’s the slowest time of year for console sales and the company hasn’t been cranking out as many big-time titles. However, Nintendo is going need an amazing holiday this year in order to meet its sales projections.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe may not have been the completely new, refreshed cart racing title Switch fans were hoping for when Nintendo’s latest console dropped, but it has been a great addition to the library nonetheless. It’s hard to imagine a new Nintendo console without an updated Mario Kart game to play on it, so it’s easy to see why Nintendo opted for a re-release of sorts while it toils with the next generation Mushroom Kingdom racer.

However, that’s not going to stop Nintendo from introducing new content to the game. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is getting a free Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild update that will see the titular character in his latest iteration enter the fray.

Microsoft had a surprisingly notable E3 showing this year. After it appeared as though it might not have much to show when it hit the stage, it proceeded to bombard us with 50 games including 18 exclusives and 15 world premieres. So yeah, things turned out alright. After all, we awarded the Cyberpunk 2077 trailer shown off during the Xbox presser one of our Game of Show awards this year.

As display technology has progressed, our streaming devices have been playing catch-up. Nintendo still doesn’t support 4K, and the Xbox One S/Xbox One X has only supported HDR10 so far, with no Dolby Vision support in sight…until now.

In an upcoming update to the Xbox One software, Dolby Vision will finally be released. As it stands right now, no major gaming console supports Dolby Vision, as the PS4 Pro still only supports HDR10.
