Just twice a year, lucky LEGO builders have a chance for their creations to be reviewed by a team of actual LEGO designers in hopes of becoming the next kit to hit store shelves. And earlier today, LEGO unveiled its latest round of reviews for the second half of 2017. With 6 potential sets up for evaluation and on the cutting block, the LEGO Ideas review board unveiled some unexpected results.

Update 2/1: The LEGO Ideas Ship in a Bottle set is now on sale directly from LEGO for $69.99 shipped! 

LEGO Ideas has brought us some of our favorite sets in recent memory, but not every set submitted earns the glory of someday adorning store shelves. However as we covered way back in August, a new set would be joining the lineup of successfully-crowdfunded kits. And after teasing the release on Twitter, today LEGO has officially announced that on February 1st, Ship in a Bottle will finally be available for purchase.

Growing up, I was never a huge fan of cars or motorcycles. That carried over into the LEGO sets I longed for, with most of my collection centered around spaceships and the like. So when it came to the Technic kits, ones primarily consisting of vehicles, they never really caught my eye.

But that changed earlier this year with the release of the BMW R 1200 GS Adventure set, the first licensed motorcycle in the lineup. And after getting my hands on it, I’ve realized everything I’ve been missing out on  with the Technic series.

The year is finally winding down, with December proving to be yet another solid month for LEGO news and releases. The national release of the latest chapter in the Star Wars Saga, The Last Jedi, brought with it some fantastic new kits, the massive Technic Mack Truck saw a UK release and the BrickHeadz lineup will be expanding its cast. There are a plethora of collectables from the holiday film “A Christmas Story” on Amazon, but nothing that you can build yourself. Well, now LEGO enthusiasts and “A Christmas Story” fans have voted to get the LEGO version of the house to officially become a real set sold online and in stores. The initial goal was to reach the required 10,000 votes and move onto the next step by Christmas, but the votes were tallied and hit 10,000 on December 15.

In the past year or so, collectible figures like Funko POP! have become more and more popular. Looking to jump in on the demand, LEGO has since launched its own line of figures deemed BrickHeadz. We’ve seen some pretty iconic characters join the ranks from Marvel, Disney, and DC. More recently, LEGO announced that it would be filling out the Star Wars lineup just in time for the latest addition to the film franchise. Finn and Phasma were the first two publicly released figures, follow along for our hands on.

In the lead up to Star Wars: The Last Jedi, we’ve seen a quite a few sets trickle in to further excite fans. But with less than a month before the next continuation of the Star Wars saga, LEGO is showcasing a few more kits to build out the lineup.

Update 11/26: The Taj Mahal set is finally available for purchase from LEGO.

The LEGO Taj Mahal kit has not only been a highly-coveted fan favorite, but also one of the largest models sold by the company for some time. After being dethroned back in September by the new UCS Millennium Falcon, the set’s part-count fell to be the second highest. Today LEGO has announced that it will be resurrecting the iconic Indian landmark in the new Creator Expert 10256 Taj Mahal set. The kit goes on sale November 27th with the retail price of $370. And while the re-release won’t be reclaiming its position, it will be an opportunity for collectors to get their hands on the model.

Maunzi is a fun new robot that kids can build from the ground up then control using LEGOs and a smartphone. The interactive toy can teach kids about robotics, how to develop code and even use Augmented Reality. Currently being funded on Kickstarter, Maunzi is still working to meet its fundraising goal with 14 days left in its campaign.
